Flawed economic models mean climate crisis could crash global economy, experts warn States and financial bodies using modelling that ignores shocks from extreme weather and climate tipping points

“The climate scientists we surveyed were unambiguous: current economic models can’t capture what matters most – the cascading failures and compounding shocks that define climate risk in a warmer world – and could undermine the very foundations of economic growth.”

Should be the top story everyday.

Can @gaia.eco stop their harassment for building their following. I wasn't interested in this slop the first time they followed me. Even less so the 20th time or more.

I was asked this week who are my ecologist heroes

I said no one. Academia does not need heroes

It needs collaborative, systematic, and non-hierarchical working

A Christmas lesson from plant ecology: why plants like holly and mistletoe may not be as well defended as we think Christmas is a time of expectations, when we assume that familiar traditions will work as they always have. Qesser Zuhrah and Amu Gib have been on hunger strike for 46 days.

They are at serious risk of death.

They are in prison because the UK would prefer to lock up young opponents of mass murder than stop facilitating genocide.

The Home Secretary must intervene.

Haunted lately by @galaxyproject.bsky.social CO₂e estimates for jobs. This one MEGAHIT assembly: ~450g CO2e. I've run this ~150k times on HPC, ~75 tonnes of CO2e 😬. Perhaps ARC/NHMRC would accept Australian Carbon Credit Units as part of the grant cost for offset? What others are doing in AUS/INT?

Increasing canopy cover elevates vehicle collision risk for barbastelle bats (Barbastella barbastellus) at roads - Scientific Reports Scientific Reports - Increasing canopy cover elevates vehicle collision risk for barbastelle bats (Barbastella barbastellus) at roads

📢 New paper from my PhD! 🦇

Using 3D reconstructions of barbastelle bat flight paths over roads, we found that increasing canopy cover leads to lower flight heights, elevating collision risk.

A hugely refreshing and too short time away from UK's insanity. Not everything is green in Rep of Ireland, but the people and government do have some decency.

Looking forward to speaking at the event - I've found Wikipedia really useful in my Hons. class to help the students select important information from published papers and synthesis it as Wikipedia entries - we have been slowly ticking off all the African Raptor species, which often lack good info.

System: a set of things working together as parts of an interconnecting network

Ecosystem: a biological community of interacting organisms and their physical environment

There is no need for other sectors to appropriate & redefine ‘ecosystem’ in an affected way

‘System’ does the job fine.

NERC policy on resubmissions This policy only applies to research grant applications.

Really disappointing new policy from NERC banning resubmissions of grant applications

Many of us, including me, have won grants on resubmission,

using the reviews to improve the application

This is is neither fair nor productive
