Around 1870, so during his lifetime, to distinguish him from other Architects named Thomson.
Have a read of this great article by Dominic D'Angelo from the Alexander Thomson Society which explains more -
"Why 'Greek' Thomson?" share.google/yc3xbsmTMifT...
The reply = you're from Edinburgh vs Glasgow
It definitely influenced his work too. He understood the connection between health and wellbeing with fresh air and access to natural life which can be seen in the pragmatism of his architectural designs and details.

Today is the anniversary of Alexander "Greek" Thomson who was born #otd 9th April 1817 in Balfron.

"History will judge-" let me stop you right fucking there, history doesn't do fucking shit, I'm a historian, let's be clear here: elected officials need to do their fucking jobs, right now, before it happens, or future historians will judge THEM. Everyone knows and knew who Trump was.

The entrance was for gentlemen to access the smoking and billiard rooms above the other tearooms. Catherine Cranston made good use of spaces designed for individual gendered use at a time where it was appealing for customers
"Remembering Thomson" by Lorraine Murray
Alexander "Greek" Thomson, the wonderful #Glaswegian Architect, died #otd (22 March 1875)
He influenced much of the built environment in the West of Scotland.

A metal sculpture of a tree in a district all too lacking in trees, with a tall and moderately ugly office building behind. A traffic cone is perching in the branches, because of course it is.
The "Tree That Never Grew" on Bothwell Street, bearing the four emblems of the city: the bird, the bell, the fish, and the cone.
He went on to say there may be more than one skull amongst the divvied up bones in the 3 places, so maybe its best they all stay where they are π€
I was at a talk by Neil Baxter who sort of tried this when he organised the first Glasgow 'City of Love' festival in 2002/3. Apparently three places hold St Valentine's bones: Glasgow, Dublin and Terni in Italy.
Dublin didn't want to send their remains to Glasgow for a temp exhibition...

It's sad to hear reports that this mural of St Enoch and a young St Mungo on a tenement on High Street in Glasgow has been removed during work currently being carried out on the building. The mural was painted in 2018 by the street artist Smug.
