He spotted her from his kayak, just beyond the breakers. Seal eyes, sorrowful smile. Familiar, but strange.

“You remember me now,” she whispered.

He did. Childhood tides. Secret swims. A kiss beneath kelp.

He never paddled back.

The apothecary handed her a vial
"Just one dose" he warned.

She drank it as midnight struck. A knock at the door. Opening it, she froze. It was her but healthier, stronger.

The doppelgänger smiled "You're the sickness. I'm the cure" As it stepped inside, she felt herself begin to fade

By trickery of spring,
the fern is
but a green thought,
still folded from the dark;
the earth has taught it
how to keep a secret.

I Confess - Allison Luterman

I stalked her
in the grocery store: her crown
of snowy braids held in place by a great silver clip, her erect bearing, radiating tenderness, watching
the way she placed yogurt and avocados in her basket,
beaming peace like the North Star.
I wanted to ask, "What aisle did you find your serenity in, do you know
how to be married for fifty years or how to live alone,
excuse me for interrupting, but you seem to possess
some knowledge that makes the earth turn and burn on its axis-"
But we don't request such things from strangers nowadays. So I said, "I love your hair."

That was a journey. Did not see that ending coming. A mini tragedy. Loved it, but ouch.

Thanks, Carl!! Wide angle lens caught more of that amazing tree and sky. Side note, I'm seeing more monarchs and we have plenty of milkweed ready for them 😄

‘Whispers of Nature’ First International Haiku Contest 2026

Haiku Association of Sri Lanka

Honourable Mention

beach day
baby’ s first prints
return to sea

Tré – USA

Ravi Kiran's commentary: The crux of this haiku is the second line. Different babies take differently to their first visit to a beach. Some get very excited and others get petrified. Once the feeling settles, babies instinctively explore and are amazed at how they can leave footprints in the wet sands. The last line captures the cyclic nature of life.

That's a giraffe finger puppet story for the ages. You'll be telling it forever 😄

Yeah, I bet we do!! I loved working in film. Did it for ten years but the travel got to be too much.

Whoa, I went down like 3 different avenues with that reference. At first I thought you meant an earnest giraffe, then I was thinking of old lady Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham & her tea comments. I looked it up to find Ertha Kitt. Anyway, sounds like you had an understanding giraffe 😅

You're clearly a proud finger puppet giraffe wearer, which I totally get, but I also get other people's reactions too 😂 Giraffes are one of those animals that always look like they're assessing you. Did he give you the side eye, like he told you to be careful with those scissors? I feel like he did

What a great story!! 😂 Speaking of surprised looks on faces, I used to work in film and during a scene with zombies, a suspended platform collapsed and the extras, all in zombie makeup, fell to the floor. It was like a 20 foot drop. No one told the paramedics. It was bad, but it looked a lot worse!

I know I don't come off looking great in this story 😂 But I'm delighted by your response.

If I was cleverer, I'd have. I went with Cleopatra, but new ones sprout up periodically 😄

Thanks, Tré! They live outside in containers near my compost bin. When I feed the compost, the fruit flies scatter and the plants feed. The more bugs they eat the more red they turn. Mwa haha!

Oh no! Yikes 😳 Hope it's right as rain now.

I'm afraid I'd eat the plantain before I administered it.

Horizontal orientation, black and white candid photograph capturing a busy underground platform at Grand Central Terminal, New York City. The scene features two parked Metro-North commuter trains with visible MTA branding and car numbers 33 and 32. Commuters are walking on the platform; dynamic motion blur captures people moving quickly in the foreground, including a figure carrying a large bag. Overhead, distinct linear fluorescent lighting illuminates the concrete structure, exposed piping, and suspended lit signage with legible text, including a Reuters advertisement. The depth of field extends down the platform, emphasizing the vanishing point created by the trains and architectural lines. High contrast rendering defines textures of metal, concrete, and clothing. Optimized for urban photography, photojournalism, architectural history, MTA infrastructure, and NYC tourism indexing.

Here is a black and white nature photo of an acorn split in have, revealing its heart shape inside. The seed half rests in the upper left side, its top slightly tilts left on a fallen log. In the background, textures of cracks and wood chips dip in and out of the bokeh.

Fun fact: The average oak produces 2,000 to 10,000 acorns a year. During the tree’s “mast year,” which occurs every 2-5 years to ensure survival, it produces 10,000 acorns. Also known as bumper crops, this massive output helps the seeds escape being eaten. Nature is incredible. I couldn’t help but wonder, what about our output of love? Is more love in our lives the answer to our survival? Focusing on building supportive communities, friendship, and nurturing the land feels right. For us, every year can be a mast year; this realization inspired the latest alliterative senryu from my journal.
