A fluorescent image of a sea urchin embryo undergoing its first cell division. Microtubules (green) radiate outward in two star-shaped arrays (asters), and DNA (magenta) forms two bright clusters of condensed chromosomes that are separating toward opposite sides of the cell. Image acquired with a 20× objective on an epifluorescence microscope.
🔬 Fun biology in my Cell Bio lab course! Today students used a rapid antibody stain to visualize microtubules during first cleavage in sea urchin embryos—I’ll never get tired of seeing these beautiful embryos 😍

GBE | A Chromosome-level Assembly and Functional Genomic Resources for the Model Annelid Capitella teleta
Davies et al. assemble the genome of polychaete Capitella teleta, a model for evolutionary developmental biology, comparative genomics, conservation, and ecotoxicology, generating a 243 Mb chromosome-level genome, and publish a genome browser.

In animals with large genomes, finding cis-regulatory elements can be very challenging. Enhancers can be located tens/hundreds of kb away from their target promoters. We face this challenge in Parhyale, with >3 Gbp genome.
We just published a preprint describing how we are tackling this problem. /1

How could a simple self-replicating system emerge at the origins of life? RNA polymerase ribozymes can replicate RNA, but existing ones are so large that their self-replication seems impossible. Could they be smaller?
Excited to share our latest work in @science.org on a new small polymerase.
