As we approach Spring and the return of our favorite pollinators, please enjoy this video of me losing it over a snowberry clearwing hawkmoth that visited us last year. He got too chilly on the garage floor and couldn’t take off. A few minutes in the sun had him right as rain.

It is time for the Annual Naming of the Bee.
We get a territorial male Carpenter bee each year who claims our deck and keeps the wasps and hornets at bay. It looks like this lil champ has claimed us this year and it’s now time to name him!
What do you think we should name this one?
Bros will tell you they’re thinking about the Roman Empire when THIS kind of drama exists right under their noses.
(I like taking pictures of moss, lichen, and fungi battling for dominance but I can never figure out who to share it with)
The official explanation they’re apparently going with here is that they aren’t 100% convinced that breathing soot and ozone is actually bad for you.
I think today is an excellent day to talk about an artist who inspires me. Kay Walkingstick play with the ideas of duality, contemplation, and love. Her works are beautiful in photos but you should really see them in person if you get a chance.
@nateswenson.bsky.social Hello tree biologist! Slightly odd question: Do you know what causes these strange marks/protrusions on this tree? It’s the only one like it at my local park, as far as I can tell. I’m in WV.
I don’t care about my work being used to train AI because, let’s be real, I’m not making AIs *better* with my shitposting.

This is Gwenna Longline, my Harengon Ranger for a DnD campaign. Normally, she’s a contract whaler/fisher who can’t afford to be picky about who she’s working for. But lately she’s been traveling with a small crew of adventurers...

Interesting perspective!
Progress continues on my Harengon DnD character! Feels like I’m finally nailing this digital watercolor thing!

Old vs. new outlining style. Feels like progress!
I’m recovering from a longer term arm injury and in the process, finding out a lot of my art style was stemming from discomfort.
Now that I can afford to be gentle and slow, new trends are emerging.

The Lorax is racing Left Shark around the block while a Plague Doctor and Ender Dragon are hanging out with Spiderman. Nature is healing.
New study shows global warming not caused by pollution, but rather saving too much daylight time. Gov’t issuing daylight refunds this weekend, plunging us into an additional hour of night each day.
Mucking around with stamps. I think the misprint cats might be cuter than the good prints? What says you?

I get that the news cycle is packed right now, but I just heard from a colleague at the Smithsonian that this is fully a GIANT SQUID BEING EATEN BY A SPERM WHALE and it’s possibly the first ever confirmed video according to a friend at NOAA

Hello, if you have a moment I am working on a logo for my design and print shop and would appreciate any votes/feedback, please. The company will be called LithoFish Studio. Thank you for your time.

Why does Instagram always ask me this question in the most deranged private convos and nowhere else?
Welp.

@europebutterfly.bsky.social I pulled this poor little guy off the deck where he got flattened by some hard cold rain. He’s still alive, just barely. Anything I can do for him beyond just letting him dry off in a safe enclosure indoors? I’m in the eastern US but figure EU advice would be similar.
With something like 90 to 95% of all known animal life being invertebrate, I feel like the critters need more representation. 😁😜 Where are all the "Bugs"?
A small dog wearing a bright blue hoodie with a paw print on the side sits on a desk, surrounded by computer monitors and office supplies. The dog looks slightly unimpressed.
A top-down view of the same dog lying on the desk in the blue hoodie. The desk is covered with a green cutting mat, a notebook, and various office tools.
Looks like Beanie has decided I’m done sketching for the evening. See ya once she wakes up, lmao.

Two bats hanging upside down from a tree branch, depicted in a whimsical watercolor illustration. One bat wears a red Santa hat, while the other has a blue scarf. They are leaning toward each other, smooching with a tiny red heart between them. Below them hangs a sprig of mistletoe tied with a pink ribbon. The background is a soft blue sky with green leaves and orange berries on the tree. Text on the image reads, ‘What if we kissed above the mistletoe?’
Merry Christmas!

You find yourself sitting at vast wooden desk. The people in the room are talking about something, but your eyes are drawn to the wanted poster sitting in front of you. You can't make out the name, but the face is a young wizard with strange, dark eyes. Curiously, his hands and mouth are blank.
You start pencilling them in idly, almost unconsciously. But before you can finish -
"What are you doing!?" shouts one of the other people in the room. He lunges across the desk, spilling ink across the poster.
"That's the Wildwood Wizard! No one knows exactly how his magic works, but you can't draw his hands or his mouth. He can use those to cast spells and cause havoc." You apologize, confused. The conversation moves on, but a slight movement catches your eye. Were you imagining it or did the poster just... wink?

Question: What was the reason for using in tank footage of the shallow water fishes vs in situ footage of deep water fishes? I’d assume the in tank footage was much more clear and easy to analyze, but I’m curious if fish swim differently in situ vs in tank.
Working on a character for a story I’m writing. The first sketch was the idea I put down 3 years ago, the second sketch is a recent iteration. Lots of fun!
