"Mosquitoes in Iceland are more than a curiosity or future annoyance. They are a warning …" - Amanda M. Koltz and Lauren E. Culler

Iceland—previously the only Arctic nation without mosquitoes—no longer holds that distinction.

"The detection of mosquitoes just north of Reykjavík in 2025 reflects an ecological shift already underway," write Amanda M. Koltz and Lauren E. Culler in a new #ScienceEditorial. https://scim.ag/4tg86pJ

Striking the balance between discovery of new questions and working on known problems At least in the environmental sciences this is an important question - what is your answer?

How to strike the balance between developing new ideas and working on established problems?

What is your answer?

Help us uncover the hidden lives of Europe’s ground-nesting bees When most people think about pollinators, they picture bees visiting flowers. But for many species, a large part of life happens elsewhere: in the soil. Many pollinators do not just feed above grou…

Unexpected Climate Signal from the Arctic: Increased Methane Uptake YouTube video by naturvetenskapitGU

At a long-term research site near Abisko, Sweden, researcher Mats Björkman (BECC coordinator in Gothenburg) & colleagues have studied how methane moves between land & atmosphere for over 30 years. Their findings suggest that drier soils can increase methane uptake: www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0vu...

@thoerren.bsky.social maybe something for you to answer?

Hive mind request.

I’m looking for long term insect (ideally pollinator) monitoring schemes that have conducted weekly/monthly transects/counts for several years. I know of the Bee walks, UKMS, and PoMs in the UK.

I would love some non-UK examples!
