Nut-tree Tussock is a terrific moth with an even more terrific name. Such a good spring moth to have.

Neil Young Old Grey Whistle Test 15 oct 1985 YouTube video by Rolling Rockvideos (rollingrockvideos)

Sad to hear that Andy Kershaw, my favourite DJ in the mid-late 80s, has died. He interviewed Neil Young for Whistle Test in 1985, one of my favourite interviews with Neil, I remember it so well. Neil listening to Green on Red is terrific, around 6'40 in. And DBTR burns!!!

As well as Limosa-fest, there were still Great Egrets galore around Ouse Washes this afternoon plus a fine โ™‚๏ธ Garganey & decent numbers of wildfowl. Also lovely to meet & chat with @birdergirl.bsky.social ~ you have such a good local patch Rachel!

Oh I love this one...๐Ÿ™‚
July 3 2023 - we saw a fresh juvenile limosa at Titchwell ~ Ouse Washes bird, white flag #12.
April 16 2026 - there he is, on the Ouse Washes, now a smart adult โ™‚๏ธ, flag readable!
So cool to see him again.

Post image SE what the ringers say, but this looks like a 2CY bird (a big female). Distinctive pale grey panel across the coverts and not a lot of colour in the head and breast.

Another exhilarating afternoon of limosa watching on the Ouse Washes this afternoon. The birds weren't too close but what an experience ๐Ÿ™‚ Minimum 15 birds seen, plus 75 islandicas - several new CR birds seen compared to the last visit here.

More NFY moths ~ a superb Great Prominent, a Scorched Carpet & a cracker of a Nut-tree Tussock (definitely one of my favourite moth names...).

Another poor night of nothing at CMO HQ ~ just into double figures from two traps. Macro highlights were a dusty Powdered Quaker, our first Northern Drab of the year & another Swallow Prominent.

There's one field in particular on our loop of the valley where we always come across Field Pansy (& sometimes Wild Pansy too). These gorgeous little violet-tinted variations on a theme were amongst the clean white & yellow flowered plants.

Enjoyed a decent walk around the valley this morning ~ plenty of Blackcaps & Chiffchaffs, single Sedge Warbler, 5 Cetti's & Common Whitethroat + our 1st Lesser Whitethorat of the year. Also 3 Ravens, several Red Kites & displaying Marsh Harrier.

Post image I was really excited when I found the adult Bonaparte's on a chilly Saturday at Swanpool. It's still really clear in the mind & I remember that, with a less than extensive grapevine in my notebook at the time (I was pretty new on the scene as a rabid teenager out as often as school work and parents would allow!) it was a struggle to spread news.

After speaking to Richard Crossley (who was a couple of years above me at Okehampton Comprehensive) I ended up calling a local "Corn" ~ an arch suppressor of the time & very much one of the notorious old guard of Cornish birders who *really* didn't like sharing anything much ~ who gruffly thanked me for the information and ended by saying "we don't spread news here"...

A few months after submitting, I got the Mike Rogers handwritten postcode advising me of the acceptance with a nice note from Peter Grant complimenting me on my notes. I never forgot that...

Very happy times.

The last Bonaparte's Gull I saw as an official rarity was last September when one of our regular trips to Sandwich took in the superb long-returning adult at Oare Marshes. Just like that moulting adult in 1983, I really enjoyed this quality Nearctic vagrant.

There's been a fair bit of chat about BBRC removing Bonaparte's Gull from the official rarity list. I guess the time had come...I've got a real soft spot for them, the 2nd BB rare I found, 43 years ago when I was a proper kid birder๐Ÿ˜ฑ - shame they spelt my name wrong!

Our very own furry rocket preparing for blast off from the garden launch pad this morning, Lunar Marbled Brown taking to the air with a calling card left for good measure (it's what I'd do before lift off I'm sure...).

Chilly again last night, the temperature barely crawling above 5 degrees after a muggy day. Smaller number of moths (22/12) but our 1st Lunar Marbled Brown of 2026 was so smart. Gorgeous moth (someone could make a nice jumper from that pattern).
