This support will help launch a new phase of my research collecting saliva and dental calculus samples from pregnant women to generate pilot data for future studies. The goal is to better understand how maternal oral health and biological markers relate to pregnancy outcomes.
Excited to share that I’ve received pilot funding from the Institute of Social Science Research at Arizona State University!

Are you involved in oral microbiome research? 🧬
We’re conducting a brief survey to understand how researchers report metadata for their oral microbiome studies. You must be 18 or older. To be eligible, you must have conducted research on the oral microbiome (past or currently).
Long-term, this could mean more personalized care and help protect baby and mom.

My study explore how the oral microbiome and salivary proteome may help predict hypertensive disorders of pregnancy, a serious condition that affects maternal health. By analyzing salivary and dental plaque, I’m hoping to uncover early biomarkers that could make dental visits part of early screening

Measurement underpins all science. Yet, in microbiome studies, subtle differences in lab protocols can profoundly alter results. In our new study, we compare DNA extraction and library prep methods to assess their impact on ancient oral microbiome recovery. Our results show that no single approach

📌 In short, we will employ metagneomic, proteomic, and metabolomic strategies to saliva & dental calculus to uncover how periodontal disease risk in Romania is influenced by behavioral and microbial factors.
🧬🪥 Just published! Our new paper introduces the SANA-biome, a biocultural study exploring how diet, lifestyle, and the oral microbiome shape periodontal health in Romania.

🚨 Exciting News! 🚨
I'll be presenting at the Society for American Archaeology Annual Meeting Friday, April 25th at 1 PM (Colorado time)! 🦷
My talk will explore how the arrival of the Roman Empire along the Lower Danube is associated with oral microbiome shifts.
Excited to join this exciting team and help ensure microbiome is usable for all!

In my case. I guess we built the ‘minimal’ aDNA lab. With good results and neglectable levels of modern DNA contamination. An order of magnitude cheaper than GN aDNA labs. aDNA libraries built in this lab ended up in these papers:
