I actually preferred the plates to photographs due to the fact that, as you say, they accentuated the features. They are also just beautiful to look at. Yes, they were relatively few in number and I remember they often had a delicate tissue-like page proceeding them for protection.

When I studied forest ecology at university, the main focus of my thesis was bryophytes. My thesis adviser had me using reference books from the early 1900s. I had to learn a new vocabulary to understand the descriptions. Written in a kind of scientific poetry, the color plates were stunning art.

I'd love to see them in concert. Your post put me in a Bunnymen mood and I've been listening to the classic early 80s albums today.
Might move on over to the Cocteau Twins in keeping with the 80s vibes. 😊
