A group of adults outdoors in a grassy woodland clearing, closely examining moss samples using hand lenses during a field workshop.
A participant wearing a red hat and green jacket uses a hand lens to closely inspect a small moss sample, with others blurred in the background.
A classroom setting with several people studying moss samples at tables, with microscopes, notes, and a presentation screen visible.
Close-up of bright green moss with fine, star-shaped structures growing among blades of grass.
A great day at our woodland bryophytes workshop 🌿
Field ID + microscope work = getting properly up close with mosses.
Thanks to everyone who joined us!

Comic-style cover image with a bright blue radial background and a photograph of moss growing over a rectangular stone block. Large text at the top reads “NEWS OF THE WEEK.” Three diagonal coloured banners below show the title in Italian, Spanish, and English: “Non Sottovalutate le Briofite,” “No Subestimen a las Briófitas,” and “Do Not Underestimate Bryophytes.” A vertical photo credit appears on the right, and the Drops of Science logo is in the bottom right corner.

Tortula truncata, growing on wet soil, next to an ephemeral pond.
Syntrichia laevipila, with small propagules, growing as epiphyte on Quercus suber.
Hedwigia ciliata, saxicolous on exposed granite rocks.
Barbula unguiculata, on disturbed soil next to an unpaved road.
Some bryophytes that I found a couple of weeks ago, during a walk around Sant Climent Sescebes. Tortula truncata, Syntrichia laevipila, Hedwigia ciliata and Barbula unguiculata. More info in the images. #bryophytes #mosses

The scarce liverwort of arable habitats Sphaerocarpos - they need ripe spores for identification. A bit is on the kitchen windowsill getting regular sprays to keep it moist. Hoping it's Texas Balloonwort as it has the best English name but either of the two balloonworts would do!
My most exciting find on Weds w the wildlife group was Sphaerocarpos in a sandy arable field that had asparagus in it until last year. New for Shropshire but unless I can get a sample to ripen on the kitchen windowsill it will be Sphaerocarpos sp. Help! #bryophytes @bbsbryology.bsky.social

Sphagnum teres is one of the few species in the UK with a consistently prominent central bud to its capitulum. A great indicator of base enrichment and a memorable species to learn for upland habitat identification!
Sphagnum Teres
A loose growing, lawn forming species found in a base-rich flush in the Yorkshire dales.
Glowing in the sun and showing off its amazing colour, sometimes described as 'malt vinegar'- but it can be completely green in shade!

Darker colours are found in shadier, wetter parts of the riparian zone, with that growing at water level sometimes looking completely black.
Hyocomium armoricum
A neat-looking riparian moss found most commonly in the North and West of the UK.
Shades vary from inundated black and green, to drier variants of golden brown, and can be recognised by its large, neat growth style and habitat.

Two participants sit at a table during a bryophyte identification workshop, examining moss samples with microscopes while using field guides and notes. One person holds a small clump of moss while another studies specimens under a microscope. The table is covered with books, hand lenses, and identification sheets, showing a hands-on learning environment.

Scapania compacta has leaf lobes that are a similar size, facing in similar orientations. This gives it a flatter, more regular look compared to other, more three-dimensional species.
Scapania compacta
Despite being full of rain here, this is a Scapania species found in relatively drier areas. It was very common across a slate covered, gravelly riverside in the Lake District due to the free-draining nature of the substrate.
