I discovered while on another site a #sphagnum expert! @sphagnums.bsky.social ..I'm sure you're aware.. but if not I posted a beautiful photo a few minutes ago! And I'm feeling inspired to do another collage...it's more rewarding than waiting for our idiot

Sphagnum teres is one of the few species in the UK with a consistently prominent central bud to its capitulum. A great indicator of base enrichment and a memorable species to learn for upland habitat identification!

A loose growing, lawn forming species found in a base-rich flush in the Yorkshire dales.
Glowing in the sun and showing off its amazing colour, sometimes described as 'malt vinegar'- but it can be completely green in shade!

1/3 Thank you to Nestle Waters & Premium Beverages UK and @envagency.bsky.social, who came #sphagnum planting on Combs Moss this week. In March 2025, we completed capital works on this site near #Buxton, as part of our first blended finance restoration project.
Our 7th #Moosstart project meeting.
This time, we meet online.

Sphagnum magniae, from Sandy Run Savanna Natural area, Onslow County, North Carolina (20 Sept. 2025, B. Aguero 21498, voucher at DUKE). This species, one of four in the S. magellanicum complex in eastern North America, is distributed mainly in the coastal plain from New Jersey to Florida and along the Gulf coast. S. magniae is closely related to the cold-temperate to boreal S. diabolicum and all plants from New Jersey to North Carolina are genetically admixed between these two species. 3/3 #Sphagnum species that grow in water such as S. cuspidatum tend to be more tolerant of freezing than dry-preference species. Yet it is an incredibly resilient plant overall, that will endure all seasons as long as the bog conditions are good.
It's always great to see how #sphagnum plugs are getting on. These plugs, planted on rewetted moorland at Rishworth, are already showing their bright green colours. Sphagnum can hold up to 20 times its weight in water, so its growth on the moors helps to keep these #peatlands boggy and healthy.
Fab talk this week from Ruth Helmore, based at @hutton.ac.uk in #Aberdeen, about how #Sphagnum reacts to #drought exposure when the water table is at different depths!
Wow! #Sphagnum
2/2 #Sphagnum moss is essential for healthy peatlands, helping to store carbon, reduce flood risk and create habitats for plants and wildlife. If you are interested in getting involved, please email info@yppartnership.org.uk for further details. #GreatNorthBog #PeatlandRestoration

1/2 That's a wrap on volunteer sphagnum planting days in 2025. This year around 20,000 sphagnum plugs have been planted in the #PeakDistrict and #SouthPennines by Moors for the Future Partnership volunteers, helping to work towards the target of over 1,500,000 for 2025-26.
