We’ve had ‘strict/warm’ I propose ‘gentle opponent’. I often set myself up in opposition to my year 7 class. ‘You’ll never manage this one’ ‘I’ve made this way too hard. No way you can do this’ and act surprised and impressed when they inevitably complete the task. Seems to work really well.

Hey maths people. What are some big pitfalls to avoid when writing examples? I’m talking stuff like using 2^2 where the correct answer can come from a misconception. Or anything else!
Trying to collect a few for a thing.

Maybe I’m later to this than everyone else but : PowerPoint’s convert to shape tool works amazingly well with geogebra diagrams.

Anyone want to join in with a Sunday evening Don Steward appreciation thread? I know there must be countless amazing tasks on donsteward.blogspot.com that I’ve never even looked at.

What are your favourites?

Duelling Mathematicians

In #MathsToday, this week I've enjoyed playing a new game I've been working on: Duelling Mathematicians!

interwovenmaths.com/duels

Two players at the board take turns answering maths questions, with chess clock-style timers.
The sounds/music are the best bit!

More topics being added soon...

Four problems about diagrams made up of congruent rectangles drawn on a coordinate grid.

Three problems that can be represented by simultaneous equations: one about the length of two strings of square and circular beads, one about the weight of a bucket containing different amounts of water, and one about the value of a given number of coins.

Applications of simultaneous equations might be my favourite topic. There are just so many fun problem types! We did these Don Steward beauties in Y10 #MathsToday.

Questions like this, taken from an international maths competition for Grade 2, are great in helping to encourage pupils to develop strategies such as compare/contrast, rather than adding up the numbers on the balls as suggested. 'If you add up...' might have been better. #iTeachMath #UKMathsChat
