โ€œA Dark Saint Davidโ€™s Day"

In the early hours of 01 March 1927, an underground gas explosion at Marine Colliery, Cwm, killed 52 men. Rescue teams from Abertillery, Abercarn, Crumlin, Six Bells and more came to assist. The cause of the explosion was never found.

My photo shows a Roman Rippenschale (ribbed) blue glass drinking cup with a rounded body and slightly flaring rim. There is some breakage to the rim. The ribs run vertically around the body of the cup, with horizontal bands of white trail decoration around the cup. At the rear of the museum display case, part of a larger ribbed dark blue glass bowl can be seen.

So excited to get this online! Merch for my upcoming Valleys show in Clwb Ffoto, Newport (launch event March the 6th)- definitely as a print, and hopefully as a tea towel! All the colours are picked from my own actual photos, and as such are part of the fabric of the Valleys!

Now in the care of Newport Museums & Heritage Service - stored in the same facility as the Medieval Ship. It would be good to see it on display one day.

Barlands Farm boat which dates from the 3rdC AD belongs to a "Romano-Celtic' tradition. With its mast step confirming propulsion by sail, this relatively sophisticated vessel may owe more to late #IronAge traditions.

Margam park Roman villa find could be 'Port Talbot's Pompeii' The largest Roman villa ever found in Wales lies less than a metre under Margam Country Park.

Many congratulations to Dr Alex Langlands & team from Swansea for this stunning new discovery from Margam Park in south Wales ๐Ÿ˜ฎ๐Ÿฅณ.

The coastal belt in south Wales is very heavily ploughed, but it sounds like this villa complex has been preserved below old parkland ๐Ÿ‘Œ

How Celtic languages spread across Britain and Ireland: why we need to reconsider the early story New insights from archaeology, genetics and early inscriptions are helping to uncover the story of Celtic languages in Britain and Ireland.

For any friends who don't know, Simon Rodway is a leading scholar in this field.

When will this crisis get any attention whatsoever!? A THOUSAND ACADEMIC STAFF AT ONE INSTITUTION SERVED REDUNDANCY RISK NOTICES! And that's not counting what's surely being visited on professional services staff too. This is an economic catastrophe, to say nothing of the intellectual catastrophe!

Not sure shouting "Bernard Manning" like a closing time drunk will help much here.

Butrint, a UNESCO #WHS, is slowly sinking due to the natural geography of its site in Southern #Albania.
This niche is part of a Temple complex dedicated to Roman god of medicine, Aesclepius. Modern walkways keep visitorsโ€™ feet dry.

There was a racist pogrom in Ulster literally weeks ago. An actual violent pogrom. People fled their homes in terror.

Local Authorities: Dealing with Heritage Crime | Historic England This page provides information for organisations, particularly local authorities, who deal with heritage crime and the consequences of crime.

There is some very good advice here from HE.

If you are interested in this area, especially in developing awareness and training in #HeritageCrime it is worth having a word with Mark Harrison, HE's subject lead, who has really driven this area of their work.

In Belfast, so went to see the statue of Big Jim Larkin, leader of the Dublin lock-out. His great rousing lines are more pertinent than ever: โ€œThe great appear great because we are on our knees: Let us rise."

Caerwent head

Caerwent head

A few years ago I had the good fortunate to l handle this Caerwent find, usually displayed at Newport Museum, when it returned 'home' on a day trip for a S4C TV programme. Celtic? British? Romano-British?
