Large quantities of roofing tile and brick were produced by the #legion for use at the fortress.
From about AD 100, many were stamped with the legions title, official use only. The kilns were probably located near the River Usk. 📸 My own.

#FindsFriday - Cremation Burial.

The leaden canister contains the cremated bones of a man aged at least 35 in a linen cloth. Libations of #wine, milk    or honey could have been poured down the leaden pipe.

Found at the south-east of the fortress at #Caerleon #Archaeology 📸 My own

Isca: Near the barack buildings were communal toilets, and at one end of the complex you can see the remains of a bread oven. 

You can also see remains of the fortress walls, a gate and corner turret, cookhouses, and latrine drains.

Soldier: Titus Flavius Candidus was a soldier of the ordinary ranks, serving in the Second Legion Augusta.

Origin: He was from Ulpia Traiana, a city in the Roman province of Germania Inferior, which is now known as Xanten in Germany.

Service: He served for seven years and was stationed in Britain.
Death: He died at the age of 27.

Memorialization: His life was recorded on a gravestone and a funerary inscription (RIB 357), both of which are important archaeological sources for Roman Britain.

Celebrations at Caerleon, marking the 175th anniversary of the opening of the National Roman Legion Museum. Over 800 visitors came to activities at the amphitheatre, the church, the neighbouring school and the museum itself.

Quintus Julius Severus - #Veteran

Julius Severus retired with the privileges and status of veteran (veteranus), and settled close to the fortress. His original home was Dinia in Gaul, now #Digne in south-east #France.
