We have Andrena cineraria nesting in the lawn of our new house. Only the second bee species recorded from the garden so far, but hopefully many more will find a home here as we begin to improve our small garden for wildlife. 🐝

It was really nice to find Brown Hairstreak eggs at the Begbroke site last week. This species has declined due to hedgerow removal and annual flailing. The site offers promising potential for hedgerow/habitat enhancement alongside the development that could support this somewhat elusive butterfly.
Love my new entomology mug! What a crackin Christmas present, my family clearly know me well 🐜🦗🪲🦟🪳🪰🐝🐞🦋🐛

Lots of Holly Blue, Celastrina argiolus, around the ivy at the moment. The spring generation primarily uses holly, whereas the summer generation switch to ivy. One of the many beautiful species supported by this underrated plant!
The sun is shining in South Oxfordshire, perfect weather for FIT Counts on the Ivy covering our hedgerows! Female Ivy bees busy collecting pollen, not many other insects today. FIT in 😉your last counts before the @pomscheme.bsky.social survey ends on 30 Sept 🐝
Yes pleae do, it's a good record. Its an interesting species, a cleptoparasite of other Pompilids! bwars.com/wasp/pompili...
A 'zombie' 7-spot ladybird standing guard over the cocoon of Dinocampus coccinellae.
Many people have noticed the abundance of 7-spot ladybird in the UK this summer. I wonder if there will also be a related boom in Ladybird Parasitoid Wasp, Dinocampus coccinellae? It turns the host beetle into a 'zombie' bodyguard, standing guard over the developing wasp pupa.
What a privilege to have been able to spend a week learning techniques in insect taxonomy from the legendary Steven Falk & @liamcrowley.bsky.social. A million thanks to Thomas Hesselberg & Zoë Simmons and her staff at @morethanadodo.bsky.social for the experience.

Both of these species are widespread and fairly common. More of a reflection of recording effort/bias but great to see nonetheless!
Female Hairy-footed Flower Bee, Anthophora plumipes, sheltering from the incoming thunder storm! Think I might have to do the same
Carabus granulatus is such an underrated beetle - just look at this beauty!

It's not uncommon for honeybee workers to take short flights out of the hive to defecate during warm spells throughout winter.
Lovely (albeit wet) day in the field yesterday, establishing a sampling programme to measure a biodiversity baseline at Begbroke Innovation District. However recent heavy rain had flooded several pitfall traps!
I had a great day at @sangerinstitute.bsky.social yesterday for the Tree of Life meeting and 2000th genome celebration. Wonderful to see and share Darwin Tree of Life project progress and all the amazing genome-enabled research being done. @petermulhair.bsky.social
The taxonomic biases in biodiversity data are growing over time. The amount of data we are collecting is growing, but the biases get bigger. We need to make a conscious effort to study the understudied!

Hello Bluesky! Moving over from the hell hole site, hoping for a more positive experience with plenty of insects, science and collaboration. 🐝
