Great opportunity to share early outputs from the Combs Moss Green Investment project at the @iucn-uk-peat.bsky.social conference! Lots of insightful and thought-provoking discussions with the wonderful peatland community @drelliott.net @moorsforthefuture.bsky.social

The authors were Mikaela Hoellrich, Darren James, David Bustos, @adarrouzetnardi.bsky.social , Louis S. Santiago, Nicole Pietrasiak . The paper was published in the Frontiers Research topic www.frontiersin.org/research-top...
This #biocrust research www.frontiersin.org/journals/mic... assessed carbon exhange, an important functional role of biocrusts in the global #carbon cycle. I loved the images that illustrate succession, and was fascinated that the intermediate cyanolichen type exhibited the strongest C fixation.
Andy Gonzalez (@bio-diverse.bsky.social) challenges how we interpret biodiversity trends, warning of geographic & taxonomic biases. He proposes a more precise method for understanding human-driven shifts. Tune in to #InsideBiodiversity for the full convo on May 1st!

reminiscent of hyperspace in 8-bit Elite - thanks! Great to see you are still doing this crazy stuff Angel. Take care. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Elite_(...
I did not know you could do this, thanks I will have a look... I've got an educational project I want to publish too.
#Microbiome research hub investment for Merseyside: www.bbc.co.uk/news/article... ; According to the article UK is the world's third-largest microbiome researcher - didn't know that! Hope this will boost jobs and #biotech in the region.
I gave a presentation about #biocrust showcasing articles from Frontiers topic on "spatio-temporal development and ecological functions of #soil surface #microbial communities across different scales". We got 25 articles, see the editorial. www.frontiersin.org/journals/mic... More to follow...
Many data sets held by NOAA are being "retired" in may, including datasets relevant to ocean sciences and climate. If you have need for these data, or are an archivist, it would be good to download this now. PLEASE SHARE WIDELY. www.nesdis.noaa.gov/about/docume...
I loved the science in this linking #microbial productivity and Saharan dust to macroscopic #ecology in Greenland. But my favourite insight is (quote): "the reason why this area was so important archaeologically, is because it is so important ecologically" .
From the archives! Charles Keeling on "Rewards and Penalties of Monitoring the Earth". scrippsco2.ucsd.edu/assets/publi... . A good read for research students and supervisors, covering personal and political challenges for pursuit and application of #science for enhancing human life and prosperity.
I made a guard to protect the @openacousticdevices.info #audiomoth membrane... Last time the audio recorders were out on peak district moors the membranes were damaged, maybe pecked by birds, resulting in damage to the devices.
I'm new on bluesky, used this tool to import my tweets... The dates have not been preserved. Now to find the people I used to follow on twitter. github.com/marcomaroni-...
Glad to have finally done some proper first aid training which I had not adequately prioritised before. The Rescue and Emergency Care course from Derek Burdett was fantastic. If I miss an admin deadline nevermind this was worth it. https://x.com/AnneDanbyPeach/status/1699808377017188690
Learnt a lot about #acoustic #ecology and enjoyed being part of this... Some interesting projects coming up. I think acoustic monitoring is a great tool for monitoring biodiversity change over time. https://x.com/abr_eco/status/1628684535301808128
I had a break from twitter, back to give it another go now. Sorry if you tried to get in touch and I missed it.
nice figure, bit animal-centric. #Bacteria and #fungi and #plants shown to have more biomass than animals. Plants 450Gt, Bacteria 70Gt, Fungi 12Gt, ALL Animals mere 2.6 Gt (carbon masses). Full version and some notes at https://t.co/RqbCvLyoyW https://t.co/oKJo4GUtck
Fantastic figure, shame this is behind a paywall though in 2021! No need for that. https://t.co/oUl008qgDz . I think the work of @GEOBON_org on EBV's is great and we are starting to be able to understand/protect biodiversity in a new exciting way - including #soil #microbiology https://t.co/Eg9z
#soil surface #biocrust #microbial ecology remote-sensing etc. researchers please consider submitting to @FrontMicrobiol special issue- Biological Soil Crusts: Spatio-temporal Dev. & Ecological Functions of Soil Surface Microbial Communities across Scales https://t.co/vF293X2KAu
Shome mishtake shurely? I think EU MISSION A Soil Deal for Europe meant to say "#soil" solutions not "concrete" solutions? https://x.com/lultimoalbero/status/1450386646566854658
Nice! I tried "hot composting" this year and it worked great. Worth the effort to save the planet and also save money too. Give it a try. #microbiology in action! Resources that helped me: https://t.co/kc5JRQzDwu + https://t.co/NawUzAG19e https://t.co/fkiiONifAY
Our latest paper on #carbon cycle in Australian drylands. Previously we reported on microbial composition and wind erosion of these #soils (https://t.co/LLKNoqKbqB Microbes affect both particulate and gaseous carbon transformations/transport. Still lots to learn about that. https://t.co/dqrkgH7fSa
Out of my comfort zone doing plant surveys this week for long-term ecology research at @derbyuniesrc Cuckoo Tors Buxton. @NutNetGlobal #DragNet. Grateful to have excellent #biology #zoology students and @Steve_Hoon sharing their knowledge and helping out...
Great idea to make academic publishing involve less unnecessary work creation. I will definitely consider this, the link is worth a read. https://t.co/TOwClmRb92
I found this article really interesting. Learning from the land management practices of indigenous people in Australia from old aerial photographs, specifically looking at burning practices. x.com/BushHeritageAus/status/1...
Derwent means "valley of the oaks" - didn't know that. This clip about natural flood management and focus on trees. #Soil can play a part here too if it is not capped over, and by managing it to hold water in the land for longer. https://x.com/TimBirchWild/status/1352691269437444096
It was a pleasure opening the online debate with Spanish students @unicomplutense about "Should we put #microorganisms on the #conservation agenda?" - In English via Innovation in Teaching project from UCM. Look forward to the next events, hearing more opinions from the students.
European map of topsoil organic carbon - see how important are the peatlands of UK + Ireland for #carbon storage. Of course they are special apart from carbon too #biodiversity #soil ec.europa.eu/jrc/en/science-update/eu... #WorldSoilDay2020
Thank you @PaulLUoD , This morning I am attending the #EUsoil Observatory launch https://t.co/w4t1DKrxw2 . Formal launch is at 12:00. Soils are a non-renewable resource in terms of human lifetimes, we must protect #soil. https://t.co/l6vkFML7RZ
Exploring how to apply science for the conservation of #peatlands in this project was v rewarding. Growing recognition of the importance of understanding #microbial processes in #soil to underpin evidence-based conservation. And we have the means to do it! https://t.co/Cs9WgN6Yj7
