👀 Organic carbon weathering as an amplifier of climate warming 183 million years ago: “Weathering of sedimentary carbon-bearing rocks, such as shales, can emit significant quantities of CO2, causing temperatures to rise and further weathering to occur” ⚒️🧪

New research from @profbobhilton.bsky.social has shown that chemical weathering does not always stabilise rising temperatures in the geological past, and that weathering of carbon-rich sedimentary rocks reinforced warming during the Early Jurassic 🌍

After a couple of days of pretty bad weather we’ve been treated to some perfect field conditions today - can’t believe this is northern Scotland!

Glaciers had one of their worst years in 2025:
👉 408 billion tonnes of ice mass lost
👉 ≈1.1 mm added to global sea levels
👉 6 of the 7 worst years have happened in the past 7 yrs
Since 1975: ~9,600 billion tonnes gone (≈26.4 mm SLR)
This isn’t a gradual change...

Ryan (and me) are hiring a PhD student! Sweden is a great country to do a PhD, see the link or ask us for more details, or share with potential students!
Please nominate! That geoscientist that you think is so awesome has no chance to win an award/medal if they're not nominated! In Geomorphology we have the Outstanding Early Career Scientist award (www.egu.eu/awards-medal...) and the Bagnold Medal (www.egu.eu/awards-medal...).
New job! Please RP! 🥼🧪 ⚒️

Our perspective on ERW -Uncertainties of enhanced rock weathering for climate-change mitigation- was featured in the New Scientist
Here is the paper: www.nature.com/articles/s43...
Great news from #Cornwall, where #geothermal energy and lithium are now being generated from deep, hot granite. ⚒️

Is enhanced rock weathering ready as a climate mitigation strategy?
Our latest work explores key uncertainties — from feedstock availability and the land–ocean continuum to plant–soil interactions and socioeconomic impacts.
Now published in our perspective paper:

🚨 Paper alert! 🚨 Happy to see this review out in @natureportfolio.nature.com Reviews Earth & Environ! We go through looming uncertainties related to wide-scale application of ERW. It will be a rocky path! @mschiedung.bsky.social @profbobhilton.bsky.social @eth-eaps.bsky.social @usyseth.bsky.social
#RECCAP2 paper alert, Jemma Wadham led the polar chapter, summarizing knowns and (large) unknowns of carbon stocks and fluxes from ice sheets to land fringes, fjords, 🌊 oceans and sediments.🧪 Excellent reference starting point for future work.

Made some revisions to my "Effective, Efficient, and Fair Peer Reviewing" presentation in advance of a seminar at U-Toledo today docs.google.com/presentation...
We find large #carbon stores and fluxes associated with ice sheets, their land fringes, and oceans.
But many remaining uncertainties, & we still lack measurements to assess change. 🧪
Great to be a part of the team working on this.

Very excited to announce *TWO* fully-funded PhD positions starting this summer focusing on greenhouse gases in the peatlands of the Congo Basin! Both positions are joint between my group in @eth-eaps.bsky.social and that of @johansix.bsky.social @usyseth.bsky.social. Come join us!
We're hiring a full-time technician to support radiocarbon analyses. If you have some experience with analytical instruments and background in chemistry, earth sciences, archaeology, and/or ecology, this could be the job for you! arizona.csod.com/ux/ats/caree...

New research shows that global warming during the Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum was amplified by widespread forest fires and soil erosion, which occurred within as little as a few centuries after a huge amount of carbon dioxide entered the atmosphere 🔥
