New ESA gravity mission to detect weakening ocean conveyor At the Living Planet Symposium, attendees have been hearing how ESA’s Next Generation Gravity Mission could provide the first opportunity to directly track a vital ocean circulation system that warms ...

Fascinating and important for our future: the European Space Agency ESA plans to monitor changes in the Atlantic Ocean Circulation #AMOC from satellite with a new gravity mission.
That is important since the AMOC may be approaching a dangerous #tippingpoint. 🌊

84% of the world's coral reefs hit by worst bleaching event on record Harmful bleaching of the world’s coral has now grown to include 84% of the ocean’s reefs in the most intense event of its kind in recorded history.

The worst bleaching event ever is underway and it's unclear when, or perhaps if, it will end. 84% of the world's coral reefs hit by worst bleaching event on record apnews.com/article/cora...

Two polar stereographic maps side-by-side showing Antarctic sea ice concentration and its anomalies relative to 1981-2010 for February 2025. Red shading is shown for less ice, and blue shading is shown for more ice. More areas are below average than above. Antarctica is masked out in grey shading.

We are at the end of the melt season in the #Antarctic (austral summer), which leaves most of the remaining sea ice across the Weddell Sea region. Here's a look at last month...

Museum cabinet showing three fossil fishes.

A niche #FossilFriday: the world's greatest display of Devonian actinopterygian fossils! At CMNH, it features three different genera all from the latest Devonian of NE Ohio. Might not seem like much, but that's ~15% of Devonian generic diversity in a single museum case.

We visited the stromatolites! Not once, not twice, but thrice!
Here is a video and some drone photos of the large stromatolite area at low tide. The walkway was destroyed by a cyclone a few years ago and hasn't been rebuilt. Hamlin Pools, Shark Bay, Western Australia.

I’ve been diving Victoria for 25+ yrs & never seen a blue groper west of Wilson Prom. I had heard they’re making a comeback in the Port Phillip heads and on the weekend I saw one and managed this snap one off Pt Lonsdale! I believe this is a Achoerodus gouldii

We CT scanned thousands of vertebrates from US natural history collections and made them freely available. Countless people have used the data for research (>200 pubs) and to learn anatomy/morphology.
