Noticing Chiffchaff in #NorthShields and it’s “Chiff-Chaff” call is a joyous reminder of #Spring mainly in woodland, shrubs and scrub #Birds #Nature

This photo captures a vibrant cluster of wood anemones (Anemone nemorosa). These delicate, star-shaped white flowers are a hallmark of early spring in ancient woodlands. The blossoms feature pure white, petal-like sepals surrounding a prominent center ring of bright yellow stamens. The flowers rise on short stems above a lush bed of dark green, deeply lobed leaves. They are growing at the base of a textured tree trunk, surrounded by organic forest floor debris like dry leaves and small stones, which is typical of their natural shady habitat.

Wood anemone (Anemone nemorosa)

Nicknamed "thunderbolt" in some lore, because it was believed to summon storms. 🌩️

Because they spread very slowly, about 6 feet per century, they are considered strong indicators of ancient, undisturbed woodland.💚

Unlike many raptors, it often nests on the ground, especially in cereal crops or tall grasses, which makes it vulnerable to farming activities. Montagu's harriers are known for their polygynous behavior, where one male may mate with more than one female in a breeding season . They have excellent hearing and vision, allowing them to detect prey while flying low or over the ground. Conservation efforts in Europe often involve protecting nests in farmland to prevent destruction during the harvest. In Extremadura, there's an organization called ANSER, they do a tough work, protecting the Montagu's harrier nests with fences, to avoid the harvesting machines.

A somewhat rotund looking house martin in flight, seen from below. It has a very white fluffy looking belly and chin. Its upper body is blueish black, but only its cap can be seen here. It has a tiny beak. The bird is catching the sunlight, neatly outlining each individual feather on both of its wings, which re spread wide.

After the barn swallow (boerenzwaluw) and sand martin (oeverzwaluw) now the house martin (huiszwaluw) has also returned! A sizeable group was foraging above the lake. This is probably the roundest one I've ever seen. #birds
