#GenDivRange also integrates supplemental information such as #habitat type, IUCN RedList status, #taxonomy etc.
📢#GenDivRange is out on @ScientificData!
An open database for #genetic diversity of 19,173 geo-referenced populations among 1,109 species. The most comprehensive resource to date.

Don’t miss cutting-edge talks, posters & socials across time-scales in ecological genetics! 🦊🦗🐡🌲🍄🌾
Thank you Leo!
Perhaps biology is not fair. We need generosity and inclusiveness instead.

I can only feel blessed and grateful now.
I am truly grateful to be awarded the #Croucher Fellowship 2024 for my research on oak trees @OxfordBiology. Thank you @croucherFDN for hosting an eventful Symposium and Foundation Day Dinner. Also lovely to meet with Prof Paul Lehner FRS again since he chaired my interview.
We’ve just got a new member in the @MacKay_Lab——@nanopore PromethION P2 Solo! More #sequencing and more #biology!
3⃣-minute read @OxfordBiology @UniofOxford:

A little bonus take-away: we found that #BUSCO is inaccurate in these conifer megagenomes, many of the predicted single-copy genes actually show considerable variation in normalised coverage. It is understandable as up to odb_10, no reference species is a conifer.
Our study demonstrated how long-insert #sequence capture and a de novo local assembly approach help study genomics effectively in these #megagenomes (> 20 Gbp)! Also a big shout out to @ArborBio and @nanopore!
Interestingly the gene involved in the pathway one step before, Ugt5b, is found to be dominantly single-copy.
We see CNV among populations of white spruce, which co-occur with the budworms, but not in Norway spruce. This might imply potential selection forces on the gene in white spruce.
This gene encodes the enzyme that catalyses the conversion of glucosides to the active forms piceol and pungenol, which confer #resistance against herbivory of spruce #budworm.
spruce tree!

Copy number variations (CNV) occur more often than SNPs. In plants, we have seen ~200 copies of RLG1a in monkey flower and EPSPS in carelessweed.
Our study found up to 381 copies of Bglu-1 in a white...
Who can believe just in the blink of an eye we’re near the end of #BES2023. Finally our very own @ymalhi’s Presidential Address. “Why do I do #ecology?”
Come to the @BritishEcolSoc Stand and meet the committees! Make ecology count, make everyone count. Talk to us to see how you can influence and contribute to this wonderful community. #BES2023 #BESChristmas
@lucymorley81 presenting a wealth of methods in studying phenological traits of trees and their invertebrate consumers @WythamWoods #BES2023!
Guess how many trees outside woods were there in 1850? 🌳 Old maps and hierarchical model gave the answer! Half of them were lost and they are now in great threats. @Ewan_McHenry @WoodlandTrust
Radim Hédi #BES2023 presenting how an 8-yr oak coppice forest restoration sees a rapid increase in biodiversity of plant community then stabilisation. As a researcher @WythamWoods working both on #oak and #badger, I love this “#AI badger rejoice over an oak #resprouting”.
@trishuphigh presenting the potential and challenges of blended finance model in ecosystem restoration. Happy to learn that she was also a #Somervillian during her DPhil (she recognised me by my @SomervilleOx stash at #BES2023 SIG social)!
#Oaks are such important features on the British landscape. @ChavanaBryant @UCLgeography @WoodlandTrust @AncientTreesATF presenting important work in scanning ancient trees with terrestrial #LIDAR with the #SCATTER project. Here are some magnificent pics! 🌳🌳🌳 #BES2023
I have a poster at A7.2 #BES2023. I can’t be there during the poster session but you can find me representing @BES_EGG in the ‘Meet the SIGs’ at the foyer the same time. DM me any questions or read the preprint: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2023.08.... to find out...
@JEcology Senior Editors Andy Hector and @y_buckley talk about #reproducibility in research with @rmarkdown and @quarto at #BES2023! “Self-care” is important, the future you and the community will be thankful.
