If biocide usage and non-native plants mean that your garden is bereft of colourful Lepidoptera then capitalism has your back @georgemonbiot.bsky.social - seen at a garden centre today

Tawny owl
Essex 16/04/2026
Due to the kids taking over the box, the female is spending as much time outside as the mobbing blackbirds and corvids allow. The feathers are jackdaws, she has caught three so far.
A first-summer Ross’s Gull, a bird of the high and remote Arctic, spent the day following tractors around newly sown potato fields south of Thornham in North Norfolk after an initial brief sighting at RSPB Titchwell. For much of the day it was distant in heat haze but occasionally better views if you happened to be in the right place, but later on gave itself up close to a road feeding with summer plumaged Mediterranean and Black-headed Gulls.
The unpredictability of UK birding is so much part of the fun. Who would have predicted a Ross’s Gull in mid April walking around behind a tractor in a potato field in North Norfolk? Great find by Trev Girling who got the news out immediately and superb relocate by Matt Lonsdale. #NorfolkBirding
Female Pied Flycatcher
Dungeness: Light rain early morning dropped lots of Willow Warblers on the peninsula, also Pied Flycatcher, singing Wood Warbler, Redstarts, a Ring Ouzel, Garden Warblers, Blackcaps, Common & Lesser Whitethroats, many melted away as the sun came out.

Couldn't resist a visit to see the Westleton Iberian Chiffchaff today. A wonderful bird that was constantly singing.

Ring Ouzel at New Cut Drain, Benacre this morning.
20 years since rubbish views of the only Ross's Gull I've seen, it was nice to finally get another one, and a bonus in Norfolk. Eventually showed well! #NorfolkBirding #rarebirdsUK @birdguides.bsky.social @rarebirder.bsky.social
Ring Ouzel seen just north of Benacre Sluice at 9.30 am today
Iberian Chiffchaff on Westleton Heath this morning.
"I wont fly away because you can't see me, I am so well camouflaged" said the Jack Snipe to the birder with a thermal imager...... @flamboroughbird.bsky.social yesterday.
Some great views of Iberian Chiffchaff on Westleton Heath, Suffolk this morning. Singing continuously
Underneath the headline 'WeBS Site Insight: Scoulton Mere, Norfolk’ is an image of two adult Mallards, one male and one female on calm water, with a map of the site boundary and location within the UK. The WeBS logo is beneath with the text ‘ Join WeBS - Can you help count waterbirds here?’
Are you a birder in Norfolk? We are looking for a volunteer to count Scoulton Mere, between Watton and Hingham as it hasn’t been counted since 1976! If you think you can help please contact us
