Take down bird feeders this summer to cut spread of avian disease, says RSPB Charity advises replacing seed and nut feeders, where birds gather, with small amounts of mealworms, fat balls or suet Garden birds should not be fed seeds and nuts over the summer months, the RSPB has said, in an attempt to reduce the spread of avian diseases. Bird lovers are being urged to take down their bird feeders between May and October to help birds such as the greenfinch, whose numbers have plummeted after the spread of trichomonosis, a parasitic disease transmitted more easily when birds cluster around feeders in the warmer months. Fishwives, or ‘oyster lasses’, were common figures in the streets of 1700s Edinburgh. Oysters were so plentiful that they were considered to be cheap snack food. The shells themselves, when ground up, were taken to relieve heartburn

What I think people don't realise is that this went on to become a little cultural myth which naturalists loved debunking in the early modern period. At least 15 different naturalists told us beavers were no longer found in the River Teifi between 1568 and 1748!! 🦫❌

Quote from the Journey through Wales:
Another fine river which rises in Plinlimmon is the Teifi. This flows down from the upper part of Cantref Mawr and Cariganshire, not far from the pasturelands of the rich monastary of Strata Florida. Lower down it divides Cardiganshire from Dyfed and runs into the Irish Sea. This is the only river in Wales which has beavers.

2. GERALD OF WALES
Gerald of Wales (example here from the Journey Through Wales) says that beavers are found in the River Teifi, near Cardigan and nowhere else in the south of Britain.

Winter’s alarmingly low snowpack offers a glimpse of the changing rhythm of water in the western US Streamflows the West relies on for drinking water and farms used to follow a fairly predictable arc as winter snow melted. Rising temperatures are changing that.

Winter snowpack once sustained the West through summer drought. Now, rain is falling when it should snow and melting when it should stay frozen, fundamentally reshaping how water flows through the region's rivers and reservoirs.

A full disc image of Earth, as seen from the Orion Crew Module. The planet is a pale blue, swirling with white clouds and glowing slightly lighter blue in place from reflected light. At lower left, a large brown landmass is Africa, with Spain and Portugal with twinkling lights where the planet curves. At top right, auroras glow in a thin green glow, just barely separated from the planet's surface. Earth is set against the black of space (pic: NASA/R.Wiseman)
