for the crack I downloaded the list of all 2,964 residents of Portarlington (both sides of the river) from #Census1926. hours of fun to be had with this data. here's the top 20 surnames, which tbh probably hasn't changed much in 100 years

Another favourite was the 1911 entry about Patrick & his 3 sons, William, Patrick and Michael

I can’t find Patrick senior or Michael in the 1926 census. Not sure if I’ve found the correct William & Patrick

The 1926 census was the first and only one where people indicated whether or not they were native Irish speakers. Unfortunately, there were so many obviously incorrect answers that it was decided not to publish any statistics on the topic.

Found my great-grandmother's maiden name in the 1926 census. Have now located her family both in the 1911 and 1901 census.
In 1901, she had 6 brothers. In 1911, she had no brothers, and her father was a widower. The poor family, what happened to them in those 10yrs? #Census1926

Think I might have found my grandfather on my father’s side in Roscommon, age 19, listed as a coal miner.

The two sides of my family: a sculptor, a dancer, and a photographic studio owner on one side, farmers and coal miners on the other side. Endlessly interesting.

It's a great disappointment not having any family living in the Republic of Ireland in 1926. I'm reduced to looking up other people's families. #Census1926

Quick trawl of extended family 1926 Census records revealed many females between 14 and 21 worked at Jacob’s, Lemons, Williams and Woods as biscuit packers, sugar boilers, or jam packers.
Males same age group on other hand were market porters, labourers, or unemployed. #speirghorm #Census1926

My great grandfather fought in the Easter Rising - he was part of the ICA contingent that raised the Starry Plough on the roof of the Imperial Hotel on Sackville (O’Connell) Street.

Ten years later, aged 30, he still lived at home with his Ma and Da.

The more things change…
