2 cats hang out next to me on the sofa while I knit. Both cats are black with white markings. One has a yellow cushion cone around his neck, and is sleeping on the sofa. The other is a cozy loaf on the nearby footstool.

The upside is this experience will help inform which vacuum we will choose as a replacement. It was super helpful to test out a cordless upright vacuum, as it's the one we reach for first. So we know it will be worth it to invest in a higher quality version, and worth it to pay for future repairs.

My husband and I are both technicians- we own many tools. My collection specializes in small repair tools. And yet I would have to acquire an additional item just to SEE IF the battery can even be replaced.

#SustainabilityIsHard example 7. Even if I have the skillset to repair an item, it is built in a way that makes repairs so difficult it's not worth my effort. Such as the pictured vacuum that needs a new battery, but there is not a single screw driver in this house that can reach all the screws.

Library 39: Carpenter-Carse Library (Hinesburg) Don't go into the library.

At Library 39 I learned why libraries are dangerous:

“The library is dangerous, full
Of answers. If you go inside,
You may not come out
The same person who went in.”

Double #knitting

…and since I mentioned double knitting yesterday, here’s a video showing how to do it 🎥🧶

Knit a stitch on the front layer with one colour and purl a stitch on the back layer with the other. For colourwork, switch colours. Make sure the strands stay between the two layers.

🧶 Knitting is radical—it defies haste, values skill, and honors tradition in a world that craves the disposable. Every stitch is an act of care, every row a quiet defiance against the rush. Craft with purpose, create with intention. ✨ #UplandFiberCo #LGBTQCrafters #MenKnitToo #MindfulMaking

February reading wrapup! Significantly less books than last month because I fell down a knitting youtube hyperfixation which cut into my audiobook time. But I found a new favorite with the novella The Past Is Red.

But small decisions add up, and in a Capitalist economy, your purchasing decisions are not benign. And I dislike when our fear, our hope, and our genuine desire to do good is exploited for personal gain by someone who is not fighting alongside us.

I recognize that corporate retailers may be the most accessible, or only option for some people. And I respect the labor that goes into creating curatedlists and responding to community input, and I know that affiliate links are a low-barrier way for that labor to receive compensation.

If we do need to buy something, we should be prioritizing small businesses and secondhand options. In the case of books, we should also prioritize public libraries, or borrowing the book from friends and neighbors. And FYI, Bookshop. org and LibroFM both have affiliate link programs.

The book list in question rubbed me the wrong way because it was not disclosed that the creator might make money from those links, and it felt counterproductive to direct ppl to buy these books from Amazon. We cannot shop our way out of any crisis.
