On our visit to the Taita Hills of #Kenya we saw all three of the localised and threatened endemics (Apalis, Thrush and White-eye), as ever thanks to a superb, dedicated local researcher/guide. However, the only one I managed to get a photo of was the Taita Whiteye. #BirdsSeenIn2026

Hair-crested Drongo, a glossy black crow, perched among leaves and branches, using its strong, but slender, decurved and sharply pointed bill to feed on nectar from the tufted fuchsia pink flowers of the Malay Apple Tree. This tree is cauliflorous; meaning it flowers (and later fruits) form directly from the woody bark of the branches or trunk, rather than from new leafy growth.

This is the garden of Greenleaf Guesthouse and Tour, who do really great trips in and around the national park at an incredibly reasonable price.

Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #Petals&Perches and I've chosen this Hair-crested Drongo sipping nectar from Malay Apple Tree flowers last month near Khao Yai National Park #Thailand. More in alt text.

A pair of Sarus Cranes standing in a field. The larger, male, bird has its wings up and head raised in a courtship dance while the smaller female bird is standing beside it, facing the camera.

Scientific name: Antigone antigone
Conservation status: Vulnerable

Another lifer. One of astonishing grace and beauty.

Sarus Cranes in their courtship dance. In India, they are symbols of marital fidelity, believed to mate for life and pine the loss of a mate, even to death.
Isn't that beautiful?

Popped in to see the Woodchat Shrike again at Pembrey this eve which was still staying loyal to its preferred bush. Walked out to the beach after and enjoyed quality time with the Sanderling, feeding ahead of a rising tide. #birdingWales #UKWildlife #birdsSeenIn2026 #birds @birdsinwales.bsky.social

The Rosy Starling is a passerine bird also known as the rose-coloured starling or rose-coloured pastor.
The breeding range of this bird is from easternmost Europe across temperate southern Asia. It is a strong migrant, and winters in India and tropical Asia. In India, it often appears to outnumber the local #starlings and mynas.
Rosy starlings are highly gregarious birds, and often form large, noisy flocks, which can on occasion be a pest for growers of cereal crops or orchards; the birds are strongly attracted to flowering trees. However, they are also greatly beneficial to farmers as they prey on pests such as locusts and grasshoppers.

1st day in #India, a new looking bird came quietly to a tree in the garden. On the last day, even as I waited for a taxi to the airport, an entire flock arrived!
Literally with the last bit of battery, on the last bit on space on the memory cards, I got these.

2 Plumed Whistling Ducks standing at the edge of a sewage works balancing pond in South Australia. The black band at the bottom is the near bank of the pond, as I had to stand on a mound of earth to see over the fence/boundary. These birds are considered rare in South Australia, and are usually found in tropical regions.

Was a bit "jammy" during a flying visit to South Australia, and found 2 x regionally rare bird species near Adelaide: Plumed Whistling Duck and Square-tailed Kite - pretty chuffed to be honest #birding #BirdsSeenIn2026
