What I told my students about the threats to evolutionary science I was floored by the question, but it matters. With U.S. funding crashing, what will happen to the future of the field?

'In short, human genetics has become an evolutionary science in a way that can’t be undone. You cannot meaningfully study how humans function or differ from one another without understanding how evolution has shaped us.'

Bifidobacteria support optimal infant vaccine responses - Nature Neonatal antibiotic use is shown to reduce immune response to infant vaccines, accompanied by reduced abundance of Bifidobacteria in the gut microbiota, with experiments in mice indicating that probio...

Delighted our study (7+ years in the making) is out today in Nature. In a nutshell, 48 hours of antibiotics in week 1 led to impaired vaccine responses up to 15 months later in infants. We show (in-vivo) a probiotic can fix it #microbiome #science #immunology

Episode 36 - Mice touching grass YouTube video by Audiommunity

Letting mice experience the "wild" alters their immune system, especially their B-cells! Also, we talk to an organizer of the Atlanta #standupforscience2025 about his experience 🧪

Science under siege: protecting scientific progress in turbulent times As Editors-in-Chief of The Company of Biologists' journals, we have been watching with growing concern the policy changes in the United States of America (USA) and the challenges that these are creati...

'The scale of disruption to science funding in the USA is unprecedented. At the NIH, study sections, funding councils and project meetings have been cancelled. Without these, new grants cannot be funded or renewed. Fellowship programs have been cancelled.'

So, not to diminish that this is a good thing but... we still don't know who they'll nominate in his place.

Differential roles of human CD4+ and CD8+ regulatory T cells in controlling self-reactive immune responses - Nature Immunology Here the authors use a tonsil organoid culture model system to investigate the roles of human CD4+ and CD8+ regulatory T cells in controlling self-reactive immune responses. CD4+ regulatory T cells we...

Cool paper from the Davis lab using human tonsil organoids to study CD4 and CD8 Tregs. Even though subjects with autoimmunity were excluded, organoids derived from female donors had higher autoreactivity, providing an ex vivo system to study sex differences in response to self antigens. #ImmunoSky 🧪

My weekend with immunologists devising new strategies to treat cancer, allergy, Alzheimer’s, autoimmunity and infection. The WH has just paused peer-reviewed NIH funding that pays for these studies. If you care about human life, write your representatives. Demand that NIH funding is restored asap.
