In this vertical black-and-white photograph, the owl balances atop a simple metal stake rising from a sea of prairie grasses. Positioned in the upper left quadrant, it is shown in left profile, its head sharply turned back as it fixes an intense gaze on prey moving below. Moments after this frame was captured, the owl launched from the post and dropped into the grass to claim its meal.

An adult male Ring Ouzel showing a mid-yellow bill (a very different tone to a male Blackbird), black plumage with a hint of silvery scaliness and a clear white crescent across the breast.

A mighty 16(!) Ring Ouzels on Horwich moors from first light this morning. For context, I've never seen more than 4 together here in 10 years! A very flighty flock that eventually settled down to feed. Incredible to watch! #ukbirding #birds #BirdsSeenIn2026
