Bluebells in a hazel wood in the Burren
An oystercatcher perched on a rock surrounded by bluebells on the Great Saltee Island
Bluebells in a historic graveyard on the island of Inishmurray
It's a lovely time of year to go exploring some of Ireland's old woodlands to discover carpets of beautiful bluebells.
Do you have a favourite place for a Spring walk in Ireland?

Yes, indeed. I think it a myth that all axes were used for chopping tough stuff like wood or bone. It may have been used for ritual/ceremonial but still used as an axe in some way. It's actual purpose is uncertain.

🪨🪓✨ It’s got axe factor! A Bronze Age 85x60mm axe made from mudstone created around pyrite inclusions. The chopping edge has use wear so it was actually used not just decorative/ceremonial.

Rehabilitation of the Dandelion!
No other plant in the Netherlands attracts as many bee species: 107. In early spring, when nothing else is blooming, it is simply there. Meadow bird chicks that have just hatched depend on the insects that are drawn to dandelions. No dandelion, no insect, no chick.

The prehistoric artist’s toolkit: hollow bird bones used as airbrushes. Artists blew powdered ochre through them to spray pigment around their hands, leaving negative hand stencils — a common technique in cave art.

A modern find & poignant reminder. A well worn George V halfpenny minted in 1912, the year of the Titanic #onthisday the ship departed on it’s fateful maiden voyage. The White Star Line’s HQ building still stands on The Strand in Liverpool.
