Northern Fulmars
Yellow-legged Gull (centre) with European Herring Gulls and Great Black-backed Gull
The Northern Fulmars are back inHastings! A first-winter Yellow-legged Gull was reward enough. But I was soon distracted by the fulmars, with at least eight nest ledges occupied, and plenty of prospecting flights along the cliff face, and cackling between partners and chancers.
Young Common Kestrel catching the winter sun at Hastings Country Park this afternoon
Hi John --- sorry just seen this! I'd agree with Herring Gulls
flock of juvenile Ruff
Squad of six Ruff (five in image; three males and three reeves) at Dungeness RSPB yesterday #ukbirding
Juvenile Common Cuckoo.
This juvenile Common Cuckoo spooked the other birds in the area as it dashed over my head in Hastings this morning. I willed it to land even for a moment and thankfully it did, just long enough for me to photograph it before it zipped around the corner #ukbirding
One of around TWENTY Green Woodpeckers seen on one of our Richmond Park tours recently. With a decline detected in this species in recent years, let's hope the family groups we saw are a good sign of recovery #woodpecker #birding #britishwildlife #britishbirds #wildlifephotography
We're delighted to have David on board!

๐ฒ๐ฆ Our latest adventure was with Chris, who discovered birding after moving to Bulgaria and needed ONE British bird. Check out the photo story here! wix.to/MhfcTNV #Birdwatching #NatureLovers #My200BirdYear #Birding #BirdPhotography #BritishWildlife
Mud and birds! ๐ฆ๐ฟ Yesterday's London Birding Breakout Tour in Kent had its challenges with the mud, but amazing birds like Hen Harrier, Barn Owl and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker made it an unforgettable experience! Read more: wix.to/zFcjI3H #Birding #Nature #Kent
Hi Julian โ I am currently preparing a report on gull roost numbers at Bewl Water in relation to similar water bodies across the UK, in response to a planning application. I wondered whether you had access to any latest figures for Chasewater...? Any help would be much appreciated.
Tawny Owl hiding in a tree hollow
That one in a hundred times that you check a tree hollow and an owl looks (sleepily) back at you... This Tawny Owl was an unexpected delight for Rachael from LA this week, noticing it while we were watching Goldcrests in a nearby conifer #ukbirding #owl
Mandarin Ducks
Black Redstart
Pied Wheatear
Brent Geese
We enjoyed exactly 100 species with Jeff and John from Ohio this week. One of their targets was Black Redstart, so naturally we picked Splash Point so give them the Pied Wheatear, which they hadn't bargained for! #ukbirding
Merlin at Rye Harbour
This Merlin at Rye Harbour last week was our 184th species logged on our private tours in the South East so far this year #ukbirding
Tree Pipit
Most of the Tree Pipits through Hastings yesterday were detected just as buzzing calls up in the blue, but this was one of two birds to pitch down on Castle Rocks for a few moments #ukbirding
Photo blog of our day out with Pratibha on Friday -- watching Hobbies hunting migrating Red Admirals crossing The Swale was a cool behaviour! www.wildstarts.com/post/tern-ar... #ukbirding
Pratibha, David and Tony
Temminck's Stint
Black Tern
Never mind the rain โ today we found inland Sandwich Terns at Sevenoaks, a lovely Black Tern at Pett and then a Temminck's Stint at Oare +92 other species with Pratibha from Florida. Lovely to share the stint with Oare's legendary Tony Swandale #ukbirding
Thanks! Yes it's legible and we've managed to get details on it. Fledged within Sussex.
juvenile pale morph Honey Buzzard
Marsh Harrier
A migration watch in Hastings this morning produced a juvenile Honey Buzzard and a Marsh Harrier, plus a trickle of Yellow Wagtails and hirundines, and a 2cy Yellow-legged Gull on the beach #ukbirding www.wildstarts.com/post/raptor-...
Merlin flying through the sand pit, with Avocets, Canada Geese and Lapwings in the background
juvenile Little Ringed Plover in flight
Third visit to the amazing Scotney sand pit this morning. 15 wader species present, but a Merlin dashing through was the highlight. Other photo: juvenile Little Ringed Plover #ukbirding
Wood Warbler
hovering Kingfisher
juvenile Turtle Dove
juvenile Green Woodpecker
Epic Kent tour with Gerry from Oregon on Sunday, tracking down every target apart from Bullfinch, which instead led to us finding an unexpected Wood Warbler, Lesser Spotted Woodpecker and Spotted Flycatcher family. Details here: www.wildstarts.com/post/kicking... #ukbirding #birds #birding
male Bearded Reedling
juvenile Dartford Warbler
It was fun birding with young birder Chester and his family last week, tracking down Dartford Warbler and Bearded Reedling by lunchtime!

Ring of fury: Seeing a Ringed Plover fighting with two Little Ringed Plovers was an unexpected way to compare these species side-by-side! #birding #my200birdyear #ukbirding
Sparrowhawk
Reed Bunting
Mistle Thrush
Great Crested Grebe
The weather was ideal for a short loop around Richmond Park with Howard, Arnie, Beth and Laurel from Boston, MA, with 40 species recorded #birding #my200birdyear
A Goshawk stopped us in our tracks while we were looking for Lesser Spotted Woodpeckers today! #birding #My200BirdYear #ukbirding
sure, thanks!
