The Red Admiral butterfly (Vanessa atalanta) in the family Nymphalidae. In the UK it is mostly migratory but some populations are resident along the coast. Migrants come from Central Europe in May and June. It is listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List with an increasing population trend. It has a very large distribution including all of Europe, Asia, North Africa, New Zealand and North America. It cannot survive cold winters so migrates to warmer regions where it can live, the populations are subject to large swings in numbers due to weather. It occurs from 0-1000 metres above sea level. It has a great variety of potential habitats from gardens, woodlands, urban areas, coast, grassland, farmland etc and primarily feeds on the nectar of flowers such as ivy and buddleia as well as tree sap and rotting fruit. The adults like to bask in the sunshine. The caterpillars feed mostly upon nettles.
