Andrew Pask: "We're going to genetically modify the endangered Quoll so they can eat invasive Cane Toads. And release them in the wild. It's a good idea! I swear!" Kidding aside, great talk and great work about marsupial conservation and de-extinction at #AGBTGM

Just saw a talk by Andrew Pask at #AGBT25 #AGBTGM on marsupial genomics, evolution, and gene editing for conservation. Completely mind blowing work. Taking both genetic editing and conservation work into a new frontier.

#AGBTGM #AGBT2025 #AGBT25 AP: quoll may go extinct in next 10 yrs. Eats toads but introduced cane toad is toxic and kills quoll. Toxin impacts ATP1A1 gene- should be able to introduce resistance. 1 single bp change increased resistance 6000x. Will help reduce spread of cane toads.

#AGBTGM #AGBT2025 #AGBT25 AP: Have worked on other marsupial genomes. Find closest living relative to extinct animal. About 500K edits relative to dunnart. Even though dunnart is tiny relative to thylacine, both are marsupials so have tiny babies and can maybe serve as surrogate.
