- Ryo Nagamatsu, age 31. Composer for A Link Between Worlds.
- Tōru Minegishi, age 38. Composer for Majora’s Mask, The Wind Waker, Twilight Princess, & more.

QUOTE:
Q: The Milk Bar Folk Duo acoustic tunes [in A Link Between Worlds] are amazing. Can you tell us if these are actual live recordings and, if they are, who performed them?

Nagamatsu: I performed the flute music live myself, using a recorder. Most of the string music was done using a synthesiser set to a lute. However, Toru Minegishi, who also works in the Sound Group, recorded a live guitar performance for the song, Ballad Of The Goddess, that you can hear when you fully complete the Hero Mode.

- Eiji Aonuma, age 50. Producer of Skyward Sword and A Link Between Worlds.

QUOTE:
Aonuma: When we created Skyward Sword, by checking the internet and seeing comments people made about it, it came to mind that maybe the users have started to get bored with Zelda, the traditional Zelda.

So we’d like to try and change that up. We thought then that it would be more important to implement a kind of hand-holding system, where users would always know what they were supposed to do. But maybe it’s different—perhaps it’s also fun to just get lost in the game and try to figure out what to do by themselves… I’m really happy that I’ve managed to release [A Link Between Worlds] with new features and a uniqueness to it.

Shikata: No, A Link to the Past wasn't on our minds at all [for early A Link Between Worlds pitches]. We didn't even have the idea of Link entering walls. We were thinking about a Zelda game with the theme of communication. …

Mouri: As soon as we started the presentation, I could clearly see Miyamoto-san's facial expression rapidly darkening. I thought, “This is bad...”

And then at the end he said, “This sounds like an idea that's 20 years old.” That was the killing blow. We were down on the floor.

QUOTE:
Aonuma: Even when I get home, I'm getting home late. I want some vacation. I want some time off.

Q: How much longer do you have … before you get that time off?

A: What we're looking at, really, is a sort of trend. I finish one project and the next one is just overlapping. My family is not happy.

Q: But they do like Zelda games, right?

A: My son absolutely does like Zelda, and my wife has started playing Zelda as well. So that's great. They understand that I'm making these games, but… They're my family, and the fact that we're not taking vacations together, not going anywhere, it's not making them happy. We're trying to find a balance. It's tough.

QUOTE:
Shikata: Every time we make a new Zelda game, we always look for a different approach, and looked for a long time. When it was time to make this game, I had the vague idea that in A Link to the Past, you could clear multiple dungeons in parallel. But when I played the game again, that wasn't very true.

So I thought it would be good to do that for [A Link Between Worlds] and we made it so that when it comes to the seven dungeons in the latter half, you can go to any of them as you like.

I start talking with them about the progress made in the last day and then we decide a priority order of what we as a team need to do in the next 24 hours or so. "Shikata: When Spirit Tracks was over, much of the staff went to develop Skyward Sword. The only ones left were Mouri-san, another programmer and I. The Nintendo 3DS wasn't out yet, but our goal was to make a Zelda game for the handheld that would follow the Nintendo DS, so for about the first year, we thought a lot about what to do.

Iwata: Just the three of you for a whole year? Wasn't that hard?

Shikata: Yeah. We anguished over it every day, wondering what we should do.

Aonuma: To add to that, it didn't mean that nothing came of it that one year. As we were testing things, that was a period when we hit upon the most distinctive feature of this game."

"Aonuma: When I first saw Shikata-san's gameplay of entering walls [for A Link Between Worlds], I was surprised, but as we played for a while from an overhead, diagonal angle view like in Spirit Tracks, that surprise faded after a time.

Iwata: Why was that?

Aonuma: It didn't look different enough when you entered the wall. Then, as I was discussing various things with Tominaga-san, we considered placing the camera directly overhead and fixing it there, and we made a test version. It felt really intriguing when Link entered a wall and the view switched from a top-down view to a side view. "

Iwata: You did that yourself? [laughs]

Aonuma: Yeah. It took about three days.

Tominaga: I think it took a little longer...

Aonuma: Did it? [laughs] I wasn't sure it was right for a producer to go that far, but I thought showing the actual thing would be more convincing and made three-dimensional landforms."
