We could hear the live music all through the venue, after appreciating the highlighted exhibit and lots of other great work, we went back downstairs to the main part of the museum to watch the bands perform.

Born in 1910, Raphael Gleitsmann, who lived in Akron, Ohio from the age of six, never received formal artistic training. The self-taught artist preferred to paint landscapes and city scenes, and generally did not enjoy painting portraits, making 'The Brown Gloves' an unusual example of his work at the age of 22. The strawberry blond woman of the painting -- fashionable in her wide-brim maroon hat, long chestnut-brown leather gloves, chic marian-blue dress with shoulder pads, and shiny gold patterned flat necklace -- appears lost in thought, looking down away to the left from us. Her stylish, modern look stands out against the dull grey background thanks to her choppy bob hair, flawless ruby red lips, rouge-tinted pale cheeks, and smoky eye makeup as well as a long white cigarette held up by her left hand. The slight melancholy of the scene is typical of Gleitsmann’s style, and reflects the major influence of Edward Hopper, whose painted scenes of American life express the isolation of modern living.
