The image shows a sequence of four portraits arranged side by side, each depicting the same man at different stages of his life, reflecting a progression of self-portraiture. The first image on the left is a delicate sketch in black lines showing a youthful boy with long hair wearing a soft cap, looking slightly to the side with a thoughtful expression. The second painting portrays the man as a young adult with long reddish hair, dressed in a black and red garment with a square neckline, holding a sprig of flowers against a dark background. The third portrait depicts him older, with long wavy hair under a patterned hat, wearing a cream tunic with a dark sash, standing in front of an open window overlooking a detailed landscape of mountains and rivers. The three-quarter pose was considered the most difficult. A frontal pose was associated with religious art, especially images of Christ.
