Opinion | The University’s Best Weapon Against A.I.: The 14th Century

I've been giving in class paper exams for years now as bulk of course grade.

Those that studied do well and know essential content for their future program and entrance exams. Some fail.

AI cannot replace basic knowledge for health care providers.

Sparkly apple for first day of school.

When you realize that your first class slide deck is way too much given all the other things that need to be discussed. But how do you cover homeostasis without covering, you know, other basics first?! Never enough time for all the things.

The Professors Are Using ChatGPT, and Some Students Aren’t Happy About It

I do always love me a great example of hypocrisy. Not that they are hard to find these days.

Either way, in this moment I'm pretty happy AI is woefully inadequate for doing anything effectively within the anatomy field - so issue is a non-issue for me.

I don't even know how to describe the mess Canva AI created...but it's like three versions of what is supposed to be epithelia but none of them are recognizable as actual epithelia.

This is what Canva AI gave me when asked to create a drawing of various types of epithelia.

It's safe to say anatomists will have their jobs for a while longer....

Just got a little upgrade to my title, from Master Instructor to Assistant Professor I.

Look out "tenure" I'm coming for ya....also in Florida so not really but it's fun to imagine.

Aging Women’s Brain Mysteries Are Tested in Trio of Studies (Gift Article) Researchers identified a gene that seems to help slow brain aging in women, and studied links between hormone therapy, menopause and Alzheimer’s.

In my previous life I was a neurobiologist focused on aging in the primate brain (gene activity). These are some cool findings! #AnatomyEdu 🧠

An anatomist, a skeleton, and a skull in the lab.

Won a little teaching award (nominated by students which makes it really meaningful to me) at my college and they do a photoshoot to celebrate. Kind of fun! A little light in rather dark times for #HigherEd.

I oversaw twelve 12 lead EKGs today. Some days the A&P lab is busier than the ER!

Good news: all appeared normal.

Bad news: I'm not convinced students can palpate ribs and intercostal spaces.

Any other anatomists teach EKG? I've got questions.

This Nerve Influences Nearly Every Internal Organ. Can It Improve Our Mental State, Too? (Gift Article) On social media, exercises that aim to “tone” one of our body’s longest nerves have been touted as a cure-all for anxiety and other psychological ailments. Here’s what the research says.

As an anatomist anything about the Vagus nerve interests me and there are some tidbits in this article.

BUT, it's the comments that are 🔥.

This.

Always telling my college students that success in anatomy is all about memorization-you have to actually know the names of structures. To do that requires practice with repetition & time in between. That's it. Then you can develop understanding of rlships and physio concepts. #AnatomyEdu 🍎

Christmas ornament with heart and skeleton earrings. Plus handwritten card.

This was a tough semester. But a few of my students left me little gifts and they’re all #anatomyedu related and I think I might cry.

And a couple of students wrote cards with whole paragraphs - no AI or anything!

I should retire now probably.

We did a quick design lab with the skin about UV - using Pasco sensors to measure UVA/UVB exposure -the results were fun - for ex: RayBan sunglasses were no better at blocking UV than $3 Walgreens ones-we ended with more questions than answers, but to me, that's a good day in science :) #AnatomyEDU
