On this day in 1066 the Battle of Hastings was fought (you know, the one King and Conqueror tried to act out).

If you think women rulers and fighters were only a recent development, read my book review charting the life and royal career of Æthelflæd, a female warrior and leader during a time when that was exceedingly rare. Without her, England wouldn't be what it is today. #BritishHistory #AngloSaxonHistory

A circular Anglo-Saxon gold pendant with intricate detailing. The pendant features a raised central setting, now damaged, with traces of a red gemstone or glass at its core. Surrounding this are eight triangular segments radiating outward, each decorated with fine gold beading and small ring-and-dot patterns. The outer edge is framed by a simple raised border. A loop at the top suggests it was once worn as a necklace. The craftsmanship and materials indicate it was likely a high-status item, possibly used for religious or ceremonial purposes.
From warrior kings to noblewomen, garnets signified power and prestige, their fiery glow illuminating the rich cultural tapestry of early medieval England. #AngloSaxonHistory #MedievalCraftsmanship
