Police commander reports decrease in Etosha poaching The Namibian Police’s regional commander in Oshana, commissioner Lungameni Sackaria, says poaching activities have reduced drastically since he took over the ‘Yesa Ongava’ anti-poaching operation in Etosha National Park. Sackaria on Thursday said police officers stationed in the national park have been working tirelessly to combat poaching activities with strong coordination among the police force. He said since taking over the reins of the operation, poaching incidents in Etosha National Park have decreased from 30 to eight incidents recorded only. Sackaria said this at Oshakati during the official launch of ‘New Era Operation’, ahead of the Easter long weekend. “As we speak now, we are already about two months in the new phase of ‘Yesa Ongava’ anti-poaching and we have not recorded any incident. This is all possible because of the strong coordination mechanisms that we have adopted. Through the intelligence led, we have managed to dismantle syndicates that were operating from Etosha National Park. We have arrested them and they are in custody now, from the runners to the kingpins that are sending them there, and we also have some on the police waiting list, we know them and we will make sure that we arrest them,” Sackaria said. He added that the police are working to combat poaching activities to safeguard natural resources including wildlife in the country. On Thursday, Sackaria launched the police’s Easter weekend ‘New Era Operation’, aimed to ensure that the long weekend is accident and crime free. He said the police will tighten their operations over the Easter weekend, with intensified police presence in and around the entire Oshana region. MEFT outlaws drones in Etosha  Niël Terblanché The Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism has announced a complete ban on drones within Etosha National Park, citing escalating security concerns linked to rhino poaching. Colgar Sikopo, the ministry’s deputy executive director of Natural Resource Management, stated that while drones were previously permitted under strict conditions, the increasing misuse by visitors has necessitated a stricter approach. “Many visitors have been entering the park and using drones with no such permission. This situation created some security risks and a disturbance to other visitors to the park,” Sikopo explained. He added that drones can be exploited by poachers to locate endangered species, particularly black rhinos. Etosha National Park is home to approximately 72% of Namibia’s black rhino population, making it a critical area for conservation efforts. However, the park has experienced a surge in poaching incidents, with 19 rhinos poached in the first quarter of 2024 alone. This alarming trend has prompted authorities to implement more stringent measures to protect the remaining population. Namibia has been proactive in its rhino conservation efforts, including initiatives like the Save the Rhino Project, which has achieved a 98% reduction in poaching incidents since its inception. Despite these successes, the recent uptick in poaching underscores the ongoing threats faced by these endangered animals. Under the new policy, visitors are prohibited from bringing drones into the park. Should a visitor arrive with a drone, it must be left at the entry gate and collected upon departure. Sikopo advised tourists to plan accordingly, noting the logistical challenges of retrieving drones if entering the park through one gate and exiting through a different gate. He added that the drone ban is part of a broader strategy to enhance security within Etosha National Park and safeguard its wildlife. He urged visitors to respect the new regulations and, by doing so, contribute to the preservation of Namibia’s natural heritage.

Etosha gets new trucks to boost conservation efforts Niël Terblanché The Ministry of Environment and Tourism has improved conservation operations in the Etosha National Park with the handover of two new trucks, valued at just over N$7.1 million. The vehicles—a Mercedes-Benz 33 Series dropside truck and a Powerstar water tank truck—were officially delivered during a brief ceremony at Okaukuejo on Saturday. The trucks were procured through funds from the Game Products Trust Fund, which channels revenue from the sustainable use of wildlife resources back into conservation efforts. The fund has enabled the ministry to invest in essential infrastructure and equipment aimed at strengthening park management across Namibia. Environment minister Indileni Daniel said the trucks will play a central role in supporting anti-poaching patrols, maintaining park infrastructure, and preventing veld fires. “These vehicles will be instrumental in our anti-poaching efforts, maintenance of tourist roads and fences, creation and upkeep of firebreaks, and the overall management and preservation of the park,” she said. The minister, who assumed office less than a month ago, described the handover as an example of how targeted investments can improve the capacity of field staff and contribute to the long-term viability of Namibia’s protected areas. “These trucks will significantly enhance our operational capacity by providing essential water supplies to anti-poaching patrols and staff in the field, supporting fence construction and maintenance teams, and facilitating road maintenance and firebreak creation to mitigate veld fires,” she explained. According to the minister, park staff often face challenging conditions, with large distances between work stations, limited access to water, and the constant threat of wildlife crime. In this context, the new trucks are expected to ease logistical constraints and improve the response time of field teams. The minister added that beyond Etosha, the vehicles may be deployed to assist in other national parks and conservation areas, depending on operational requirements. “This flexibility ensures that the ministry can respond swiftly to emerging threats across the country’s vast network of protected areas,” she said. Daniel urged ministry personnel to ensure that the vehicles are used responsibly and maintained diligently. “I urge all of us to ensure that these vital assets are used responsibly and well-maintained, as they play a key role in safeguarding the park’s natural heritage,” she said. The minister inspected the new vehicles and handed over the keys to park officials. Daniel said that the addition of the trucks is part of a broader push by the ministry to improve working conditions for staff on the ground and protect Namibia’s natural heritage through sustainable management and operational readiness. “With poaching syndicates growing increasingly sophisticated, logistical readiness has become as important as ranger training and surveillance technology,” she said. She indicated that plans for the future will include additional equipment acquisitions, infrastructure upgrades, and renewed training of frontline conservation workers. The Etosha National Park is one of Namibia’s most renowned wildlife destinations, drawing thousands of visitors annually. The minister said that its success as a conservation area depends not only on biodiversity and scenic beauty, but also on sound infrastructure and efficient management.
