TOMBSTONE OF M. ULPIUS IANUARIUS, 130-150 CE. S. CATERINA DEI FUNARI

This rather lovely tombstone was turned face-down and reused as a paver in the C16 church of S. Caterina dei Funari in Rome. The top part, trimmed off, shows the deceased on a kline, banqueting. His epitaph is purely military: "Marcus Ulpius Ianuarius, sesquiplicarius [an offer who received pay-and-a-half] of the Emperor's horse guard, from the squadron of Valerius Bassus, a Pannonian by birth, lived 45 years and served 23 years. Marcus Ulpius Primus, from the same squadron, his heir, took care to have this set up for his well-deserving friend". Ianuarius was from the turbulent province of Pannonia in the Balkans, and took the family name of Trajan, along with Primus, his heir. Based on the epitaphs we have of these guards, many came from the Balkans: skilled cavalrymen, they were not from old Roman settlements sponsored by members of the court, but owed loyalty only to the emperor.

The #tombstone of an imperial guard for #EpigraphyTuesday tells us quite a lot about the changing composition of the #Roman #empire in the C2 CE, and provides another splendid example of #Antonine #epigraphy. This slab was used as a paver for the church of S. Caterina dei Funari. #AncientBluesky 🏺

ALTAR TO HERCULES, 140 CE. BATHS OF DIOCLETIAN

This altar was found when the artificial hill called the Monte di Giustizia, where today's piazza dei Cinquecento now lies, was demolished in order to build Termini train station in the late C19. It was broken into pieces which were all found and put back together. The fairly good C2 formal script says

L(ucius) Antonius / Caricus Hercul(i) / d(onum) aram d(edit). / Imp(eratore) T(ito) Aelio Anton(ino) / Pio III, M(arco) Aelio / Aurelio Caesare co(n)s(ulibus).

"Lucius Antonius Caricus gives this altar to Hercules as a gift. Titus Aelius Antoninus Antoninus Pius emperor (and consul for the third time) and Marcus Aelius Aurelius Caesar (consul for the first time)".

On the side of the altar we can see a splendid pig, with bristled spine and downturned head, apparently content to submit to being sacrificed. A similar porcine offering is on the other side.

Putting the #pig into #EpigraphyTuesday with this altar from 140 CE dedicated to Hercules by one Lucius Antonius Caricus. Lovely #Antonine formal script and on both sides, a high #relief showing a splendid pig, the unfortunate sacrifice. From the #BathsofDiocletian. #AncientBluesky 🏺

The #Antonine Baths of #Carthage powered by the mighty #Zaghouan #aqueduct (built under #Hadrian ) & the vast La Malga cisterns - 15 vaulted chambers holding up to 60,000 m³ each. One of Rome’s greatest feats of engineering in Africa, it supplied water until damaged in the 5th and 11th centuries.💧🏛️
