Firecrest
A very quiet Saturday last weekend resulted in only three birds at the #AshdownForest site...at least the Firecrest made up for it! π₯

Goldfinch
Another briefly sunny morning meant I could get out to the #AshdownForest site on Wednesday. Slightly busier morning than the last few sessions but only just! Highlights were a couple of Goldfinches and four Redwings still hanging on!
Dartford Warbler
Reed Bunting
Finally a brief reprise from the rain meant I could get out to the #AshdownForest site this morning. Not much in the way of action, but a couple of nice birds were caught including a Dartford Warbler and another Reed Bunting!
Another break in the awful wet weather resulted in yet another four birds at the #AshdownForest site! π« Oh well was nice to get a Robin and a re-trapped Blackbird from last year at least!
A break in the terrible weather meant I could get up to the #AshdownForest site this morning...alas only four birds to be had. But the first Dartford Warbler re-trap for the site was good. The resident pony flushed a Woodcock as well but it didn't end up in the nets!

Think you know the Hundred Acre Wood? Discover the "weird and wonderful" reality of the forest that inspired A. A. Milne. #WinnieThePooh #AshdownForest
A crisp final session on the #AshdownForest site gave us the last haul of Redwings needed to creep up to a total of 702 new birds ringed for 2025! A single Dartford Warbler let us finish with a flourish!
A lovely ride on Ashdown Forest in the last of the sunshine today. This is where I do much of my writing - aboard my sweet horse Traveller. Somehow, words come easily to me as we mosey along, two buddies in the glorious landscape. #ashdownforest #writer #poetsofinstagram #horsesofinstagram
Reed Bunting
A quiet morning with a break in the weather, resulted in the 2nd Reed Bunting for the #AshdownForest site last week among the winter thrushes!

Redwing
Fieldfare
Winter thrushes are one of the main targets for the #AshdownForest ringing site at this time of year, while plenty around only a handful of Redwings and Fieldfares caught so far among the Goldcrests and Redpolls!
New pair of #Altberg boots! Just in time for getting back out to the #AshdownForest site at the weekend! No doubt these will be on my feet for many years to come π

Another decent morning at the #AshdownForest on Tuesday. 36 birds ringed as well as three re-traps, one of which was one of the first Dunnocks ringed at the site in 2023, still knocking about! Otherwise the highlights were the first Redwings of the winter season and another Dartford Warbler!
So many of these about this yearβ¦

Results from the control Goldcrest PAN055: ringed in Seggieden, Perth & Kinross, Scotland as a juvenile, re-trapped 632km south at the #AshdownForest! Pretty good movement for a 5 grams bird!
Clearly Autumn migration has come to an end on the #AshdownForest site with possibly the final Chiffchaff amoung the Goldcrests and Redpolls this morning. π
Another busy morning at the #AshdownForest site yesterday with over 47 Goldcrests caught and ringed out of the total of 70 birds, plus another Dartford Warbler which is always nice. Also had a control Goldcrest so it will be interesting to see where it came from! π€
Siskin
Redpoll
Another great ringing session at the #AshdownForest site this morning with 47 birds caught including this lovely Siskin and the first winter Redpolls! Alas the passing House Martins didn't play ball π
Three flowers of Marsh Gentian, which are blue-purple, but closed up in the early evening
Six more flowers, also closed, with the yellow flower of Dwarf Gorse photo bombing them
View down a big open track on the open heath of Ashdown Forest with some black cattle grazing in the middle distance, and a wooded landscape almost to the horizon
Evening walk to check out some Marsh Gentians (Gentiana pneumonanthe) on #AshdownForest
Firecrest
House Martin
Mega day at the #AshdownForest site with 80 birds ringed! Including the first Bullfinch β for the site! Numbers were up thanks to 40 House Martins who decided to play ball and go for the sound lure! Plus a lovely Firecrest amongst the Goldies π
Tree Pipit
Another slow morning despite the break in the rain this week at the #AshdownForest site today. 20 birds with a Redstart (likey one of the last this year) and a Tree Pipit being the highlights.
