On a chilly late fall day, I saw this adult Cooper's Hawk perched calmly in a bare tree. It glanced at me briefly, then took no further notice of me as I snapped away. It's crop was very engorged, so it was in no hurry. All was well in its world for the time-being. I actually left before the hawk did, highly unusual.

🌎 Cooper's Hawk (Astur cooperii) The Cooper's Hawk is a medium-sized bird of prey with short, rounded wings and a long, barred tail. Adults are blue-gray above with rufous barring below, and have red eyes. It is widely distributed across North America, breeding from southern Canada to Mexico, and can be found in woodlands and increasingly suburban areas. Its behavior is characterized by stealth hunting, flying with rapid wingbeats and short glides, using agility to pursue smaller birds through dense vegetation. A young Cooper's hawk on a large tree limb. The limb covers up the lower right quarter of the photo. Behind the haw are leaves and blurred green from other trees. The hawk has a white breast with brown streaking from its neck down. Its wings are brown, as is the top of its head. A patch of white extends from the neck up to just in front of the hawk's yellow eye. It is looking over its shoulder to the right, possibly eying something on the ground.
