The Nolan correspondence (amounting to over 200 letters) is a day by day account of Nolan’s social and intellectual life and a sustained commentary on his art and of things seen and experienced. For comparison one thinks of the Streeton and Roberts correspondence published in From Spike to Bulldog, or more accurately, given its size, character and range, of Vincent Van Gogh’s letters to his brother Theo. Nostalgia for the sky and Farmer, Dimboola are from Nolan’s Dimboola sketchbook. These strange characters – an upward-gazing, feline-like devilish figure and local farmer whose features appear inverted by old age – reveal how Nolan created psychological, rather than specific, portraits of the people he encountered in the Wimmera. Nolan had previously used Dulux for painting, a household gloss paint based on a plastic medium called alkyd. ‘I find that a desire to paint the landscape involves a wish to hear more of the stories that take place within the landscape. Stories which may not only be heard in country towns and read in the journals of explorers, but which also persist in the memory, to find expression in such household sayings as ‘game as Ned Kelly’. From being interested in these stories it is a simple enough step to find that it is possible to combine two desires: to paint and to tell stories. The history of Ned Kelly possesses many advantages from this point of view. Most of us have heard of it, in one way or another, during our childhood, and it is still a topic of conversation in those parts of Victoria where the Kelly family lives. In its own way it can perhaps be called one of our Australian myths. It is a story arising out of the bush and ending in the bush. Whether or not the painting of such a story demands any comment on good and evil I do not know.
