Just in time for the start of fall, a male Autumn Meadowhawk dragonfly perched near me on a green leaf. He had a red body with some black patches, large red eyes, and transparent wings with small red spots at the tips. Seen at Great Meadows NWR in Concord, Massachusetts.

A hand open with a landed dragonfly
One of the fun things I figured out a long while ago is that more than any other dragonfly, the Autumn Meadowhawk really likes to land on people. Leave a hand open!
The males are a darkish red like this, and they’re usually the last dragonfly of the season.
