The mosaic dates to the Postclassic period of Mesoamerican art (approximately 900-1521), specifically the Aztec Empire. It presents a high point in Aztec craftsmanship and artistic expression, preceding the Spanish conquest. It is representative of the sophisticated artistic traditions that flourished in Central Mexico before European contact, and stands alongside other examples of Aztec featherwork, sculpture, and monumental architecture. It reflects a continuation of earlier Mesoamerican artistic traditions, particularly those of the Olmec and Maya civilizations, but with a distinct Aztec style.

This painting shows a nahual—a shape-shifting figure from Indigenous Mexican tradition—transforming into a jaguar to bring rain and maize. Inspired by the ancient murals of Cacaxtla, and rooted in Chicano, Mexica, and Native identity.

Sketches depicting a Quetzalcoatl, including its hands. In the drawing on the right it is staring down at a small person that is close to falling off its pinky finger, implying great size
Trying to tinker with a Quetzalcoatl design, striking a balance between creative liberty and working with the source material is always fun with my dragon designs

For the Aztecs, skulls held profound spiritual significance, symbolizing death, rebirth, and the continuation of life. They were used in rituals to honor the dead, displayed as trophies, and believed to represent the "seeds" that ensured humanity's continued existence. Skulls were also incorporated into art and architecture, reflecting the Aztecs' complex beliefs about the afterlife and the cyclical nature of life and death. Aztecs believed in a cyclical view of life and death, where death was not an end but a transition to another realm. Skulls, as reminders of mortality, were seen as a gateway to the afterlife and the renewal of life. The Day of the Dead (Día de los Muertos), which has roots in ancient Aztec rituals, continues to use skulls as a symbol of honoring the deceased and their return.
Incredibly modern but made by an Aztec artisan over 600 years ago!
