Every day, FENS will share projects funded for BAW coupled with prominent research from the European Journal of Neuroscience, each day with a different theme. Today’s theme: brain health!
An EJN study in 2023 measured the brain waves of 70 toddlers showing early signs of autism, focusing specifically on alpha and theta waves, and looking at skills regarding language and joint attention, the ability to share a common focus with a social partner. The authors found that children with higher alpha waves power tended to have better social communication skills such as language and responsiveness to joint attention. However, alpha power did not predict how often the child would initiate joint attention. There was also no significant relationship between theta waves and either response to or initiation of joint attention, highlighting the need for further research.
This study is vital for developing early interventions for autism spectrum disorder as it focuses on the first two years of life, a critical period when the brain is highly flexible. Identifying early brain-based markers may allow for personalised support that can significantly improve a child’s long-term development and overall well-being.

Day 7️⃣ : Brain health!
Every day, FENS will share projects funded for BAW coupled with prominent research from the European Journal of Neuroscience, each day with a different theme. Today’s theme: accessible neuroscience!
Neuroscience gives us insight into how our the brains process information. and this can strengthen our cognitive defence against fake news. An EJN 2022 article explored the problem of misinformation and the neurobiological processes behind its appeal to internet users. According to the paper, several factors make fake news both engaging and persistent. These include increased sensibility towards surprising or disruptive content, reduced critical thinking during highly emotional states, and our preference for familiarity and belonging, which can lead to mental biases.
We are more susceptible to misinformation when we are unaware of the mechanisms behind why certain information feels appealing or convincing. A basic understanding of neuroscience could help us develop strategies to counter fake news. For this reason, making neuroscience accessible and understandable to the public can have a positive social impact.
