German soldiers had taken the Ukrainian city of Kyiv and forced the Jewish people living there to the Babi Yar ravine outside town. The Nazis ordered the Jews to strip naked and walk into the ravine where they were gunned down. Over the course of two days, the Germans executed 33,771 Jewish people. That was the number Nazi officers wrote in a message to headquarters in Berlin. Karel Berkhoff is a historian, researcher, and professor with the Netherlands Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies. Speaking with the U.S.-based History Channel, Berkhoff says, “Within the Holocaust as a whole, Babi Yar stands out. It was a metropolitan city in Europe that lost virtually all its remaining Jewish residents to premeditated murder, for the first time in history.”
