Their program is designed to be affordable and to appeal to travelers more interested in experiences than amenities. For the 2026 season, Savoir Vivre is based in Northern Burgundy on the Canal de Bourgogne between Tanlay and Venarey-les-Laumes due to canal work being carried out in the southern portion of the canal. Savoir Vivre does not have an onboard chef. Breakfasts are of the continental variety with fresh bread & pastries from the local bakery, along with coffee, tea, and juice. France: Special Event - Bastille Day (Monday, July 14th) If you are looking for a last-minute vacation, how about celebrating the French Revolution? Bastille Day, 14th of July, falls on a Monday which works well with a cruise week beginning on Sunday. We have several possibilities for both private charters and cabin cruises in various areas of France. England Magna Carta has only two weeks remaining in 2025. Book now before others snatch these up. A Brief History of Kir Royale Kir Royale has a colorful history that began with her construction in 1928. She was built at the Praet et Verschuren de Boom shipyard in Belgium and started life as a 36-meter (118 feet) freight barge named "Maria". Originally designed for the transport of goods, the vessel's role took a dramatic turn during World War Two. With changing times came a changing purpose. Her bow was straightened for direct transport to the Normandy beaches, where she carried troops and supplies during the D-Day landings. Disaster struck when Maria hit an underwater mine and sunk to the seabed. However, once the war was over, she was rescued from her watery grave and salvaged. Fitted with a new bow, she was lovingly refurbished and returned to service as a transport vessel. By the 1960s, the barge had been renamed the "Lemavi-X" and was operating on the waterways of northern Europe in Wallonia, Belgium. When the time came for retirement, Lemavi-X narrowly escaped the scrapyard. Instead, she was taken to the Netherlands, and transformed into a trendy hotel barge, set to cruise the waterways of Europe.
The boat was once again renamed in 1976 as the "Wirramina" and she became one of the pioneers of luxury European hotel barging. For decades, she offered unforgettable experiences to guests on the rivers and canals of Holland and Belgium. Kir Royale entered another chapter of her life in 1989 and was renamed again. She was given the start-studded name, "Étoile de Champagne", and put to work on the waterways of north-central France. After more than 15 years of service delighting guests in Champagne and the Marne, Étoile de Champagne changed hands again. In 2005, she was renamed "Savoir Faire" and continued to cruise as a luxury hotel barge on the picturesque waterways of France and Holland. Another renaming followed in 2020, when she became "Adagio" but then came Covid which was not a good time to repurpose to a new beginning. Move ahead to the summer of 2023 when Adagio changed hands once more. Following an extensive refit and modernization in the Netherlands, she was christened "Kir Royale" after the famed French cocktail. In 2024, she embarked on her first luxurious cruise through the Champagne region. Guinness cakes are a delicious treat anytime. This is a firm favourite with Guests and Crew alike. It can also be served as Guinness Cupcakes. Ingredients: 200 g cream flour 250 g unrefined sugar 1/2 teaspoons bicarbonate of soda 1/2 teaspoon of salt 1 large egg 125 g butter 150 ml natural yogurt or butter milk 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 3 tablespoons cocoa 150 ml of Guinness Preparation: Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F or gas mark 4). Prepare your cake tin by lining with parchment paper. Method: In a large mixing bowl sieve all the dry ingredients together. Then lightly whisk the egg, vanilla and buttermilk (or yogurt) in a jug. Next melt the butter, cocoa and the Guinness in a saucepan. When it is just melted, stir it smooth making sure there are no lumps. Now mix all ingredients together, pour into the prepared tin and bake for approx 45 minutes or when a tester comes out clean. Let to stand for 30 minutes before unmolding from its tin. Turn out and cool on a wire rack. As we mentioned a while back, the French Hotel Barge Nymphea is no longer accepting bookings for Loire barge cruises.
Unfortunately, due to long-term damage to navigation infrastructure on the River Cher caused by flooding, along with other operational challenges, Nymphea will no longer be able to operate her much-loved itinerary in the Loire Valley. As a result, their 2025 cruising season has been officially cancelled.

New requirements to travel to Europe & the UK Due to new travel requirements, many international travelers will need to register for an online authorization before entry to the UK and many EU nations. United Kingdom Beginning Jan 8, 2025, visitors from the United States, Canada, Australia and other non-European nations who currently do not need a visa for short stays in the UK, will be required to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) to enter the country, including those just passing through UK airports. It costs £10 to apply. Including babies and children. Beginning April 2, 2025, EU nationals will be required to obtain an ETA before entering the UK. Citizens of the UK, Ireland, and those with valid UK visas will be exempt. European Union – ETIAS Expected in 2025, the EU will require a new travel authorization for visa-exempt foreigners from 60 nations (including the UK, US, Canada and Australia) before they are allowed to enter 30 EU nations. Similar to the UK's ETA, this new program, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), requires short-term travelers to apply online, pay 7 euros, and wait up to 96 hours for applications to be approved. According to the ETIAS website as of Feb 1, 2025: "ETIAS is currently not in operation and no applications are collected at this point. It is due to start 6 months after EES." – EES The EU is set to launch a separate digital monitoring initiative called the Entry/Exit System (EES), which uses face and fingerprint scans instead of passports to identify non-EU nationals. According to the EES website, as of February 1, 2025: Entry/Exit system is currently not in operation. It is due to start in 2025. The goal of the EES is to modernize border crossings and speed up long immigration lines.
