MY @Duolingo streak is 1066. This history major thinks of this as my #BattleofHastings! 🤣

Battle Brewery is celebrating a triumphant weekend at a Battle of Hastings re-enactment event, hosting its own beer hall for the first time under new ownership beertoday.co.uk/2025/10/21/b... #beer #beernews #battleofhastings
It was the anniversary of the Battle of Hastings (1066) on the 14th October. If you're curious, in my opinion the best book to read to really get a feeling for what happened is The Wake, by Paul Kingsnorth. It's written in "shadow tongue" olde Englishe, so a bit like reading ancient Nadsat, but […]
UGH! I REALLY need to get my eyesight looked at. Apparently it is actually the annivesary of 'The Battle of HASTINGS'! 👀

A large crowd of people stood on a ridge watching a battle reenactment unfold down the slope. Banners are visible beyond the crowd, include one representing Harold Godwinson's 'fighting man' emblem. Many of the people have their hoods up or hats on. There are trees in the distance.
A large stone tablet on the ground, decked with wreaths, red roses, war memorial crosses and a small flag with a representation of Harold Godwinson's 'fighting man' emblem. It is wet, taken during rain. The inscription on the tablet isn't fully visible, but reads: THE TRADITIONAL SITE OF / THE HIGH ALTAR OF BATTLE ABBEY / FOUNDED TO COMMEMORATE / THE VICTORY OF DUKE WILLIAM / ON 14 OCTOBER 1066 / THE HIGH ALTAR WAS PLACED TO MARK / THE SPOT WHERE KING HAROLD DIED It is a registered war memorial.
On the day after the anniv. of the #BattleOfHastings I attended the reenactment, w. thousands of others. After a bright start, the heavens opened, drenching 'Norman' & 'Saxon' alike. The pic on the right is of the marker on the spot where Harold was supposedly slain, later the Abbey's high altar.
Picture of me by Brendan Cronin swinging my great axe.
Company of regia Anglorum just immediately post battle.

The only way to end #battleofhastings day is to watch yet again the sublime BBC documentary series episode 1 of #thenormans with the mighty Saaaf Laaandener historian #robertbartlett . GOD WILLS IT! (I'm an atheist but I love the confidence)
On this day in 1066 the Battle of Hastings was fought (you know, the one King and Conqueror tried to act out).

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1066, Harold Godwinson, the last Saxon king of England, may've taken an arrow in the eye at the #BattleOfHastings. A victorious #WilliamTheBastard rebranded himself "the Conqueror", giving us centuries of Norman French rule and this confusing language.

A group of eight people (seven men and one women) standing in a row in attractive parkland. Seven of them are dressed in mediaeval costume and several wear armour and carry weapons. The man second from the right has an impressive moustache and carries an axe. The one on the right (me) is not in costume, but wears camouflage shorts, a black Slayer t-shirt over a long sleeved black top, and carries a rucksack, map case and umbrella.
With a group of fellow enthusiasts at #BodiamCaste, nine years ago today. I'm on the right, armed to the teeth with map case and umbrella. With more than 300 miles walked, Battle approached. #BattleOfHastings
