When I turned 55 last year, we returned to #Mississippi.

I wanted to revisit the Green Fairy 🧚

In the very place I'd first met her

Black soldiers showed incredible bravery in the Battle of New Orleans, fighting for a nation that promised freedom but broke its word. Free men of color and enslaved troops helped secure victory against the British, yet many were re-enslaved afterward. #BlackHistory #BattleOfNewOrleans #UnsungHeroes

Rows of graves in the foreground lead back toward a red brick fence at the lower third of the picture plane. Tall red brick tower on the right. Green vegetation occupies the upper right corned, above a blurry hazy rising moon. The tower has St Bernard Parish on it, written vertically. Acrylic paint on canvas.

Just ate some boudin in celebration of the Glorious 8th. I stand firm that the anniversary of the Victory of the Battle of New Orleans should be celebrated every year with good Louisiana food. Without this victory, this food would not be American food. #cajun #creole #BattleOfNewOrleans #Glorious8th

A print of the Battle of New Orleans. Andrew Jackson rides a white horse along the American battle lines as large numbers of British troops in red uniforms march toward them. Smoke from American cannons billows over the battlefield. Several Americans appear wounded or dead. Five British sailing ships are in the harbor in the background.

The US Army under #AndrewJackson won the #BattleofNewOrleans #OTD 1815, the last major battle of the #Warof1812.

Although diplomats had signed a peace treaty on Christmas Eve 1814, the British and the US governments had not yet ratified the treaty.
