Always a favorite, the Pileated Woodpecker put on a show for us this morning.

One of the three juvenile #hawks in our yard this year. Amazing! #birdsofseattle #coopershawk #raptor #urbanbirds #wildlife
I heard a strange call while out in the yard & found this fledgling pileated woodpecker clinging to a redwood, awaiting his parent. He took off at the end when he heard dad approaching. Love those big eyes and little calls! 🪶 #woodpeckerwednesday #birdsofseattle #fauntleroy #westseattle #fledgling

Boy, they really just hop right up to you out here in #bellevue, don’t they?? 😅

"Food! Food! Go get us food NOW!" Caught this couple of junco fledglings gently nudging their dad toward the suet. 🪶 #birdsofseattle #fauntleroy #westseattle #darkeyedjunco #fledglingseason

Light brown crow perched on a mossy vine maple branch
The fledgling "caramel" crow returned this evening and gave me a chance to get some decent photos. Good light, too! No notes. 🪶 #birdsofseattle #caramelcrow #corvids #leucism #fauntleroy #westseattle #crows #lincolnpark
Fledgling downy woodpecker being fed by parent 🪶 #fauntleroybirds #birdsofseattle #woodpecker
New caramel crow just dropped in West Seattle! Spotted this fledgling today. Almost exactly a year ago we had one, though darker in colorm They occur in our neighborhood population, usually one or two every few years. AFAIK no consensus on the cause. 🪶 #birdsofseattle #fauntleroy #crows #corvid
One of the resident pileated woodpeckers popped by to say hi while I was on the deck! I never get tired of their antics🪶 #westseattle #fauntleroy #birdsofseattle #woodpecker #nerdbird

Male pileated woodpecker posed on diagonal cedar branch, body and head at 45° angle to photographer, front-lit with shadows falling across crest and bill, highlighting eye.
Last week this guy stopped by and posed before continuing to the suet. I happened to be nearby with my camera and snapped a few pics through the window, not realizing how great the light and shadows were 🪶 #bird #birdsofseattle #woodpeckerwednesday #fauntleroy #westseattle #backyardbirding #wildlife

Spotted towhee on low shrub branch, surrounded by lichen and moss
Spotted towhee on tree branch, looking toward photographer's left
Spotted towhees are not rare at all in Seattle, but in my experience they're usually pretty shy. This vibrant male, though, was very curious about me when I walked by, and escorted me along the trail. 🪶 #USbirds #lincolnparkSEA #westseattle #fauntleroy #towhee #birdsofseattle
"Just" a barred owl I stumbled upon off an inner trail in the park this morning. If you listen with sound on, you'll hear a raven pair calling to each other, and an Anna's hummingbird chastising the owl. Plus kids playing and a dog barking, because city park.

Multiple bushtits flocking a suet feeder
This female bushtit took a break from her flock's feeding frenzy, actually staying still long enough for me to snap some photos through the window. Love those fierce gray eyes🪶

Close cropped shot of pileated woodpecker head and "shoulders," beak obstructed by suet feeder. Blurred northern flicker silhouette on branch in background.
Horror movie poster? Male pileated woodpecker on suet feeder while northern flicker lurks in the shadows. The flickers don't defer to anyone but the pileateds in my yard. (Tight crop; taken through window, with obstruction on either side.)

It's a snowy #woodpeckerwednesday here in Seattle! This pileated male didn't seem to notice as he did his normal morning rounds.

Ruby-crowned kinglet perched on a budding branch
Varied thrush perched on lichen-covered twisted branch
Female golden-crowned kinglet stretching for the very best lichen
Song sparrow on ground, giving "blue steel"
Took my "real" camera and a new lens to the park today. Of course it was one of those days where I heard far more than I saw, but not bad overall. The lens is fun, but so heavy!

A Pacific wren on a small fallen tree limb, surrounded by moss and decaying leaves
My goal this winter has been to get a good picture of a Pacific wren. This is the best I've managed so far. These guys are *teeny tiny* and in my observation love burrowing through forest floor debris like little mice, never stopping. #bird #USbirds #birdsofseattle #fauntleroy #wren #lincolnparkSEA
Hermit thrush perched on a decorative piece of fencing, framed by sword ferns and a ceanothus trunk, backlit by filtered mid-day sunlight
Thrush Thursday? Is that a thing? This hermit thrush hung out in my yard for about a month Nov-Dec 2024. So adorable, but very shy. Got pushed around by the ground-foraging regulars, but managed to get his fair share of bugs. #bird #USbirds #birdsofseattle #seattlebirding #fauntleroy #westseattle
Brown creeper climbing bark of a mature European mountain ash (Rowan) tree
What bird name do you feel awkward saying around non-birders? For me it's hands-down "brown creeper." People these days are used to tits, boobies, and cocks, but this little shy camouflaged one's name remains awkward for me... #bird #usbirds #birdsofseattle #fauntleroy #westseattle #creeper
The way bushtits arrive and depart at once always amuses and amazes me. I set up an outdoor cam to capture moments like this. Like an explosion of flying ping pong balls! #USbirding #seattle #westseattle #birds #bushtits #fauntleroy #birdsofseattle

Here's a more dignified pose from one of the pileated woodpeckers that visits my yard. Taken last March on a gorgeous day.
