On this day in 1847 the inspiration for New York's #CentralPark opened in #Birkenhead. One of the world's first publicly funded parks, Birkenhead Park was designed by George Paxton, who also made Princes Park. Central Park's designer visited in 1858 + took the "People's Garden" idea back to NYC.

A splendidly different advert from the County Borough of Birkenhead in the 1959 Cheshire County Handbook advertising the availablility of sites for the location of industry. The four inclined star points note the borough's docks and ports, road and rail connections, a versatile and educated local workforce and the availability of homes for the workers. What really sets it off is the design; the three loosely drawn figures, seen from the back and infilled in beige, the title lettering and then a splendid array of typefaces that includes the lined capitals for Birkenhead and the then 'fashonable' use of lower case lettering for the lower line. Quite something! No designer sadly but I wonder if the local authority turned to a local college of art and design?
In the post-WW2 era many County Councils followed the example of other local and municipal authorities in authorising or issuing official handbooks or guides to the County. These describe the various consituent local authorities, towns and villages along with services and amenities for both residents and industrialists. The cost of production was assisted by the sale of advertising spaces for various local companies or service providers.
